I was discussing this with a few people, and we all were really curious as to what the responses would be.

Have you bought / passed on any knives because of what you've read here? Has BladeForums.com affected how you go about buying your knives? Have you saved money by using this site? Have your tastes changed or been otherwise modified by using this site? You get the picture.

Enquiring minds want to know! You don't have to go into tremendous detail, just give me some feedback, if you don't mind.

Geez Spark, it started me on Sebenzas, neck knives, Talonite knives, and Talonite neck knives! ARGGG!

Yes. Oh, that's probably too short of an answer. Well, after a 15-year hiatus, I started buying knives again. Guess what "Leading Edge of Knife Discussion" site caused that? Only $550 worth so far (2-months). Thanks. (No, really, thanks).

It hasn't affected anything I have bought to date but it has given me the urgent need to buy a Sebenza as soon as I have enough $.

Twenty months ago I bought my first knife - a $25 Smith & Wesson SWAT. About 75 knives later I'm buying mosiac damascus folders, forged fixed blades, ABS Mastersmith knives, and usually have at least one custom knife that I'm making payments on. Gee, thanks alot BladeForums.

I would say that BladeForums has greatly affected my knife buying. It was in these very forums that I first really learned about different knife steels, handle materials, and custom makers. The results, so far, have been:

  • Mini-AFCK in M2 steel
  • TTTKK by Trace Rinaldi
  • Talonite Cetan by Rob Simonich
  • BG-42 Tracker by Lynn Griffith
  • Companion by John Greco
  • Arrow Umfaan by CRK
  • various Spyderco's

I would never have heard about any of these wonderful knives or knifemakers had it not been for the forums. Great fun it has been!

This is not a good question, you are making me re-think all the knives I have "had" to have.
In December when I joined I was content with my 2 Spyderco's
Now I have at least 12 more Spyderco's
3 Sebenza's
1 Umfaan
1 Speedtech Synergy
4 Microtechs (2 more on order)
3 Busse's
2 Benchmade's
1 Emerson Commander
I'm sure I'm missing some here and there also.

Many, Many of these knives were bought through the For Sale Forums so I've saved a lot of money. My tastes have moved to higher dollar knives and seem to be getting closer to customs (I must RESIST spending more money)

Yes it has been affecting my buying. 2 years ago I wasn't that into knives. A Buck Mentor and Gerber EZ-Out was all I had and all I really needed. Then I realized that there were much better knives out there (not to say that Buck and Gerber are bad, they just are more economical knives on average) and I've been hooked ever since. I am currently saving up for an Edge Pro Apex sharpener as a result of input from forums users. Without the forums, I would just be using an 8 dollar stone to put a decent working edge on my knife. As a high school student however, all this saving up is tough work. I really wish there were more sites that put students discounts. All these knives are really taxing on my wallet.

I have bought knives through Forum advertisers. Learned more about knives, steels and handle materials than I ever knew existed. Has it changed my knife buying habits? Hell yes, I am right now looking for a knife for my wife, a Christmas present knife for a nephew and motorcycle riding buddy. These will be bought via the internet, something else I never did prior to discovering Bladeforums. Bladeforums has opened a new world to me. Thank you Mike and Spark.

Good Evening, etc.,
When I lived in NJ, I started buying knives at an incredible rate due to the fact that there was a knife dealer in my town. The guy had access to everything!!! That started me on my real quest to purchase any and all "cool" knives. (Ain't I mature??)
Well, it didn't take long before I really, REALLY needed some autos, so I did a search in Alta Vista and found this nifty place.
I found tons of resources for autos, fixed blades, folders, whatever, and have been hooked ever since.
The Limited Edition Sifu made me cream my jeans..... no wait, that's the wrong anaology..... made me wet my ... no, that ain't right either.
Let's just say they made me salivate like Pavlov's Pup in a tinkerbell factory!
(Note to self: Talk to doc about increasing meds. VG.)
So now I see all this cool stuff that's available and want and want and want!
Unfortunately, in this case, I've moved to Nevada where I'm able to pursue my other love, firearms. Doesn't leave much left over for knives, ya know?
So I'm on a bit of a pause at the moment. I bought a shipload (sic) of firearms since moving out here and now find myself having to pay for the suckers.

Once that's done, however, I am gonna be back to buying up more nifty-neato knives from sources found here. If possible, from the BFC Store... there IS a store, right?

So, there you have it.
I was pretty brief about it, too, wasn't I?

Hoping this increases my chances of a pay increase,
I remain,
VG

Yep, it's influenced me...

To join the Buck Collector's Club

To buy knives from Buck's Pete's Custom Knife
Shoppe

To buy a Buck Strider from 1SKS. (Arrived on
Thursday, thanks Mike and Spark!)

To feel that liner locking folders are not
dangerous if designed properly. (Thought that
all of them were worthless before being shown
the right path.

)

And now, from what a lot of people are saying
there is another knife that I want to buy.
A Sebenza. Well, maybe next year.

Spark, you and the fellow forumites have allowed me, a lowly student to purchase and experience some of the best cutlery and cutlery products available. For this I thank all of you.

The only thing I can say is that cheap knives are not part of my life any more. Less money, more great toys!

Doug

Yeah Spark, I have bought and also passed on knives based on what I read on BF. Thanks to you all Idon't have any POS knives any more(I managed to unload them) I have saved a considerable amount of money by learning about knives here. After I got scrod on ebay a couple of times I learned to research everything. (If you think an education is expensive, try ignorance)
The level of quality of the knives in my collection has gone up dramatically.
My level of spending on knives has gone up twentyfold. VISA thanks you, my wife does not.
I also encountered a great many knowlegeablepeople and have had very satisfactory purchases from them.

I have bought more knives in the last six months or so that I have been on the forums than in the preceeding six years. And I know more about them.

Bladeforums has affected my knife purchasing decisions in almost every way. From something as simple of just seeing pix of Knives I would never have otherwise known existed, to assisting me in making more informed educated choices after learning here about the variety of steels available and some of their individual charachteristics. Lets not forget all we know of handle materials. I learn here about new makers (two knives on order with one at the moment) that I wouldnt get to see until they hit the mags and by then its to late to try and buy. Oh and lets not forget the reviews section !! I started with rec.knives before there was a forums but since joining Basically I buy three times as many knives but feel that I have the power to make informed decisions. I may still opt for a forged 0-1 with wood handle but at least it was a decision I consiously made. Shoot to tell the truth five years ago although I was already buying knives for some time I dont know that I would have known what forged or 0-1 meant.
Thanks bladeforums for increasing my enjoyment of my hobby.

It all started with an Alan Folts Mantis and it's been downhill from there.

How's my knife buying affected?
Well, let's just say that when I want a knife now, (and I usually do!) I look first on 1SKS and only go elsewhere if I can't find it there.
There have been a couple that I've steered clear of because of forum feedback, and a couple that I BOUGHT because of forum feedback, but many more that are on my TO BUY list because of this place.
The knife industry should be footing ALL your bills guys!
They owe you BIGTIME!

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

I was pretty over my high volume knife accumulation when I started reading bladeforums. What has it done?

I bought a few new knives I thought where novel or interesting, like the spydercard. I has solidified makers and manufacturers reputations ( both good and bad ) due to the larger amount of information available.

It's also raised my expectations about quality in design and execution. It has also raised my expectations about customer service from online and mailorder dealers.

Also a significant impact has been the forsale columns, where I've been able to purchase "used" knives at a reasonable cost savings.

I may be the only member who has not used the for sale/buy forums, (!?!). I have had very good dealing with several dealers I would never have known about otherwise.

On the one hand, I have spent a fair amount of money I would otherwise not have spent, or more realistically, would have spent on something else.

On the other hand, at least I can say "Wow! At least I'm not as crazy as
Vampire Gerbil!" Not yet any way.
