How has BladeForums.com affected your knife buying?

The forums slow down my knife buying because I need more time to do research here to see what everyone else thought of the knife when they bought it. This usually takes the impulse out of impulse buying so I'm good to go.

------------------
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

Quite simply -- I've bought more "high-end" knives (e.g. Sebenza, SpeedTechSynergy, Microtech CTII). In addition, BF has introduced me to Internet knife dealers. I NEVER buy knives at retail stores anymore.

have a"knife"day

Since finding Bladeforums about a year ago, I have sold the cheap knives that I bought when I first began collecting. I refined my collection to mostly quality folders and an occational fixed blade. I buy almost all my knives from the internet now and not from catalogs which was my only source before getting a computer.
I can't say I buy fewer, but I do buy higher quality knives and what I read on the forums has influenced what I buy and who I buy from.

Yes,without a doubt, what I learn here affects my knife buying purchases.I've learned so much about all types of
knives,steels,locking mechanisms,custom,
handmade, production knives, and all the differences between them, this has directly affected what knives I've purchased.
Moreover;I've met so many people on-line and have been presented with oppurtunities for their products and services I might never have been able to take advantage of without Bladeforums,as well as also meeting a couple of fellow formites in person.
Bladeforums has given me so much information on products, and custom knifemakers whom I've never heard of before coming to this place.Bladeforums gives me alot of tech info,as well as what to expect of performance and disspell alot of the myths etc.I love Bladeforums, and thank you for all your hard work with making this community. Thanks,Ralph

buying, probably not. selling, definitely ! You guys have put a lot of money in my pocket over the last months.

Great question,

I am born again BFC...... When I first came here didn't even know that there were still 'autos' thinking that since they were illegal in all the States I'd ever been they simply disappeared. Jumped from here to the auction site and bought quite a few POS knives understanding they were such from posts at BFC...... Went like that for awhile (studying hands on at home with blades while trying to keep up here and posting occasionally to clarify things which got some responses and other times not.) Finally come to the point where I have sold off or given away ALL POS blades here at BFC hopefully for people to enjoy and/or learn from. I now understand the point about ROC knives and have NONE in my collection and am weeding out an HSN mistake as I type!

"Have you bought / passed on any knives because of what you've read here?"

Absolutely! Because of my involvement here and only my involvement here, as the retail prices in my area are ridiculously high, my collection is now only high-end Production (Benchmade, Emerson, Spyderco, MT, MOD, Chris Reeve, CRKT, OE, Buck- Of which, before coming here, I had only previously owned/handled a Buck) and now getting into Custom work from Charles Gedraitis and Michael Cooper and am a fully addicted KnifeKnut.

"Have you saved money by using this site?"

I have saved money TREMENDOUSLY on this site. IE: A knife listed for $137.99 on a very good site I was able to pick up TWO of at the same price recently through an individual transaction and have been doing backflips ever since!

"Has BladeForums.com affected how you go about buying your knives? Have your tastes changed or been otherwise modified by using this site?"

Before coming here I'd shopped a bit through TV (though only that ONE time through HSN dammit!) or magazine ads buying 'collector' type knives you see with plastic scales and a gold flake coated picture of some sort imbedded into the scales (usually a wolf, eagle or some other animal)........ Before coming here I was paying as much for those POS as I pay for Benchmade top quality stuff now! My wife admits that my tastes have DEFINITELY changes since coming here! I feel it is for the best! I enjoy the conversation, can post somewhat intelligently about knives, and chat with THE coolest Knife People every week! Might even grow to be Moderator some day?! God save us all!

Furthermore, I have recently opened a Knife Dealership to help serve the professionals in my area and hope it will one day grow to become more than a hobby as I would love to do this job into retirement and beyond! My idea is a cross between 'Cheers' and '1sks'!

"You get the picture."

I certainly do now! But only because of my involvement in/with BFC! My regular job involves 'close' physical and psychological relationships with patients so going out into my local community is usually much more stress than relief and coming to a place like this is really my greatest socialization and relief where I can relax! Sounds corny in a 90's sort of way but there are a lot of people here I consider friends and would feel the loss were I not able to interact here.

As has been stated before...... "Thanks Mike & Spark!" my life has certainly been enhanced for the better since coming here and meeting you and all these great knife people!

Shawn

BladeForum's has been a major influence in my "knife-life".
I've learned tons of information on every aspect of cutlery and the cutlery industry from this site.
I've learned what to look for and what to avoid when knife buying, models to try and models to avoid from the experiences of others here on the Forums.

Real life, unadulterated blade testing can be found here. If a knife is a POS, you can find out here. Things you won't find in the knife rags where everything is good.
We know about nearly ALL of the new knife models and cutlery innovations sometimes months before you see or hear about them in the magazines. Now, how cool is THAT?!
As for my buying habits. How about nearly $3000.00 last year spent on knives mostly on advice and tips found on this Forum.
Gee, thanks!

Since coming here I have gone from a standard daily carry of a Buck 110 to a Sebenza, large or small, Speed Tech, Crawford and on and on.

I had no idea what ATS-34 was let alone Talonite or 440V or any of the other steels. Now I have something in most of the steels that are out.

Now I have gone to customs and it has gotten worse.

IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!!!!

When I began reading BFC a few months ago I carried a Gerber multitool and an Emerson CQ7
while on duty, off duty a Spyderco Delica. When camping a K-bar, Frost Mora and Onario Machette.
I was Happy.

Now about four months later I have added:
Spyderco:
Endura plainedge
Calypso Plainedge
Wayne Goddard Clipit
Moran

Him. Imports:
BAS
Kumar King Kobra

Kershaw:
blackout
Ricochet
Gentleman folder

Benchmade 140 Nimravus
LM Wave and Micra
CRKT stiff kiss
CRK Sebenza (large plain)
Sharpeners by lansky, eze lap and DMT

and I began to give knives as gifts for any occassion.

My wife left me, my freinds scorned me and I am mocked by my co-workers. My relatives think I need mental health treatment, AND IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

May you be blessed with peace and a decorated Sebenza.

Chad

BF helped me to understand more about knives. Productions, customs , Metals, locking mechanisms, prices, market and designs that are alien to me a few years back. It has given me the in-sights of what a knife should be and it's community are like. I've found friends here and good deals too.
So how did BF affected my knife buying? With what i learned here, i'm able to stop myself from jumping into every deal i see and stay on course to what i REALLY want. Forumites have been very helpful too in providing informations that i require about a knife i'm interested before the purchase. All and all, i say BF has help me a lot indeed!

Yes.

Bladeforums has changed the entire knife industry in my opinion. Consumers like Bladeforums because they can find real information from other users and have access to multiple dealers and makers. Some people don't like Bladeforums because they can't stop the truth from getting out.

Thanks guys....

I was a regular on Benchmade's forum before this or KFC came into existence. I was a serious Benchmade bigot before I started reading BFC. Now, I don't own a single Benchmade. This is not to say I don't like Benchmades, I do, but BFC opened my eyes to all of the other knife manufacturers out there...

I know what I know about knives because of your forums. They forums have lead me to trade a large portion of my collection for a Sebenza and then lead to me to purchase a Spyderco Starmate and a custom neck knife from Sydney "Pete" Moon.

Oh, I'm a whole new animal 'cuz of BFC.

I have bought and sold over the internet; a concept that I was sure I would avoid for a long, long time before coming here. And not really because of advertising either. It is because of many testimonials from members, touting that "This guy is good" or "Watch out for that guy". I can separate hype from fact, and get what I'm after.

The products I buy are reviewed here by real users who are not paid to write articles for any magazine, and do not work for any manufacturer. Can't hide from the truth here.

And lastly, I have met custom knife makers here. What I have learned from people like Mr. Ralph, Mr. Carson, Mr. Cooper, Mr. Herman, (the list goes on) is priceless.

NO other site in cyberspace has changed my perception like this one. Well, except for maybe that U.F.O. one, whoa!

It has been a great learning experience...from people who know so much about knives....and as a consumer of knives, it has helped make me much more selective and satisfied with the new knives I have bought. Thanks for this site!!!

How has BF changed my knife buying habits?
In almost every way. I have learned so much since I started coming to BladeForums.com. I now know a lot about the diferent types of steel and I am still learning more all the time. I know about the different types of handle material, the pros/cons of the different locking mechanisms, blade geometry. You get the picture. My knowledge has increased a 500%!! I have saved lots and lots of money on my knife purchases by using this site, I promptly spent the "saved" money on MORE KNIVES

I have always liked to give knives as gifts but now I give better knives.

Thank you BladeForums.com.

Without being too redundant, I am much more aware of design/manufacture strengths and weaknesses, blade/handle materials and selection and combinations. All this has made me a more educated and selective consumer. Because of this new knowledge, I am more aware of duds I thought were great and sleepers I thought were duds. I have been exposed to makers I never previously considered...I have 3 Busses(2 folders and the 6") on order. Next year...TALONITE!

Has not changed my habits in the least. I have been a knife collector for a long time. But, it has introduced me to many new products, retailers, and other resources. Looks like my collection will continue to grow, and if I wasn't a confirm knife nut, I might even be concerned.

Had I not discovered BladeForums I would 1) Have more money, 2) Be more interesting, and 3)not have had as much fun. Thanks, BF

The forum has given me a way to research the knife tha tI am going to buy. In this way it has been an invaluable tool.
Because of Bladeforums I found 1SKS and purchased a Buck Strider, and have been absolutely thrilled with every part of the purchase.
Because of this I will be making many more purchases, and will use Bladeforums as a way to help me make the right chioces.
People have been great in assisting me with my questions and Iam sure they will continue to be invaluable.
Thanks everyone.
