How has BladeForums.com affected your knife buying?

Like most people here it has indeed added to my knife purchasing. There is an immense amount of information here that makes purchasing much easier

.( This is either a good thing or bad depending on whether you ask me or my wife! ) My purchases to date when I found this forum were several hundred, they now range in the several thousand range. This is however the premier site on the net for knife enthusiasts.

Well, Bladeforums affected my bying significantly.
I got:
Sifu; CRK PJ II, PJ I, Shadow IV; Busse Battle Mistress, Mean Street, Badger Attack because of the info obtained here.
Ordered 3 custom blades, because thanks to the forum I know the makers & I'm confident with them

Saved some $$$ too, after reading & researching certain knives I have changed my mind & decided not to buy.
Besides it's very interesting & educational & I've met lots of nice peopla from whom I'v elearned a lot

& Finally I guess that's a good chance to say thanks to forum admins & everyone else who's helping to keep this place up & running

Spark,

A little market research, eh? Good question.

For me: BladeForums has not obviously influenced my buying. I think that I've seen enough good comments on the Commander, Sabenza and BM 710 to buy one of those one day. However, this forum does a great service to the industry through promotion and stimulation of interest. It's allow me to go into greater depth and breadth in this hobby (obsession).

I had gone 20 years buying hardly any new knives (just a few war relics). I started looking for a new elk knife when I stumbled across Bladeforums. In the last 15 months I have bought around 15 high quality knives. This was primarily influenced by Bladeforums. I don't buy any magazines and I rarely go into knife shops so the internet is my primary current source of information on knives; while Bladeforums is my primary source on the internet.

Since finding BFC a few months back I too have disposed of(read "trashed") my small collection of POS knives and have moved on to bigger and better things.
I have learned so much in such a short period of time and have a much greater respect, not only for steel but for the fine artisians who work the steel. Be it custom or production.
I have passed over some "deals"

on certain cutlery since then and have refined my modest collection to a much better selection of pieces.
I now know with confidence that the knives I do have, or will choose, will serve me well.
Thank you to one and all for everything you do for me and all the other BLADENUTS that frequent these forums.

My first knife was one of those cheap S&W SWAT knives. After that, I stumbled upon Bladeforums. Since then, I've developed a taste for Spydercos, Axis locks, balisongs, Microtechs, and am looking into customs. I've also made the decision to avoid any more S&W knives and some offerings from other companies. Bladeforums has cost me a lot of money, but it's been money well spent. I don't really think my tastes have changed since I've had an interest in blades for as long as I can remember and that includes balisongs. Well, except for the fact that I feel that I NEED to get a custom knive soon

Well, I went from buying the $5 cheapo knives because they looked cool to trying to talk my parents let me shell out 200+ for a microtech. didn't work, so I got an EDI genesis 2 for a hundred. Now, I can also sharpen my knives, which I do constantly and have little to no hair on my left arm. I learned all about steel, handle material and even went on to make some knives from kits. Now I am making my own blades from 0-1 and A-2. several months ago i wanted to get a custom maker to make me a deer skinning knife. The cost was too much and it was put on the back burner. This past week, I just about finished my uncles hunting knife. I just need to polish it a little more and get is heat treated and slap on the stag handles, which I have to order. Now I am making my own sheaths, too. I know so much more about knives and that 420J2 is NOT better than 440C, which a few older catalogs proclaimed and I know that a lot of the production stuff out there is garbage and that there are real blades out there. Now I am not phased by looking at a nice, solid, sharp knife for about $200 and thinking..."hmmm...it's only 1 paycheck..." Bladeforums led to my first purchase of a knife more that $40, my first knife that almost cost $100, my first and only liner lock (EDI Genesis 2), and now I am making my own stuff, thanks to all the help I've gotten on the Shop Talk forum from Mr Blackwood (Dr. Lathe), Ed Schott, Magnum 44, and everyone else who has given me help along the way. I love bladeforums!!!

It hasn't changed my buying habits but BFC has made me a smarter shopper, so to speak. Recently I was debating whether to get a Sentinel or an Ares. It was kin of a toss-up really. I searched for everything on the Sentinel and got regular updates on the Ares as it was just comming out then. Without that info I do not know what I would have purchased. I ended up getting the Sentinel and I am very happy. Also, I first heard about the new Benchmade Osborne 940 in a post and it sounded awful to me. Again I have been checking for regular updates and now I see that it looks loke a great knife and I will most likely pick one up within the next six months. Boy am I ever glad that I got that Sentinel!!!

BFC is a great way of getting feedback from people who are much more qualified than...well... almost anyone else I know in person! It is nice to be able to ask questions and get feedbackfrom 6000+ knife nuts before purchasing anything.

I don't buy customs (yet) but I have started learning how to make knives. I don't think that there is enough bandwidth for me to post how much BFC has helped me there...

yeah, what they said!

I buy more knives now than I ever did before I stopped "collecting" (buying garbage) 10 years ago. I have bought a few custom pieces, and many production knives, almost all at great discount on the FS/T forum. My knowledge of the knife world has tremendously increased, & I get a lot of vicarious pleasure from reading about others' purchases. The reviews section is invaluable. But I can't see myself buying anything at a retail store again, aside from cheapie gifts perhaps, because "good things come to those who wait" - patience has its inevitable rewards on the FS/T forum!!!

Hi again spark... IMHO - BladeForums has done a real service in the field of education .. all of us can learn something new.. I was into knives before lots of the people posting were born.. but I've learned a lot about design, price, steels, quality, and what works for some other people.. NOT sheeple! I have recommended that some folks get into the forums and just read - particularly those behind the counters in some knife shops.. I for one have really appreciated the information and the sharing of opinions about lots of issues and features on the subject of knives. Thanks to you and Mike

An old dog can always learn new tricks. I have been sharpening and selling knives for years. I knew about the sebenzas but never gave them a second thought. Then I became a registered member and out of curiosity began veiwing the Reeves forum. I was amazed about the volume of praise they received.

So I began searching the knives for sale forum. I bought a n.i.b. Sebenza for 275.00. It turned out to be a zig-zag pattern with a polished blade. Not only did I learn about the special quality of the Sebenzas on your site, I also got an extra special one for a stealers price. Keep on educating me.

Due to information found on Bladeforums I was able to finally purchase a Victorinox Farmer (several, actually) from www.swiss-knife.com. I had wanted one for years, as a happy Vic user, but they aren't sold in the USA. Thanks!

I became a convert to hawkbill designed blades after reading posts by Sal and others.
As to it's effectiveness for self defense, the more I train and play with it the more I like it. Also I find it much more suitable for my everday cutting chores. Opening boxes and plastic pails, especially the pails as I do not need to adjust the angle to avoid poking a hole through the container.
I now want to buy a Civilian and a stainless Harpy.
Zytel is a good plastic but G-10 or metal give a higher quality feel and more confidence that it will not fail under hard use.

Spark, the feedback i received on the Sebenza's was my main reason for purchasing one. I was sitting on the fence and could not decide which side to step off. I am glad i made the purchase. I feel it is the best darn production folder on the market.

Because of BladeForums.com I got my first Sebenza. More have followed. Then came Microtech. Then came a custom knife from Larry @ Knifeart.
One thing the forums has not changed is my favorite type of knife which is custom slip joints. There doesn't seem to be much interest here.

Jeff
