How have your knife requirements changed over time ?

My knife requirements have not really changed but my realization that I do not need a 4" blade to complete them has.

Now I carry a knife with a 2 5/8" blade. I have not missed that extra blade length either.
 
I still have to like the design, and have a pretty well rounded plethora of things I like. But the biggest change is, now that I know more about Steel, I have to know (and respect) the Steel that's used in a knife before I consider buying it.

Generic terms like;
"Stainless" - "surgical" - "high carbon"
Are deal breakers for me.
