How have your tastes changed?

Kinda circular for me.

Started with a small kershaw chive
Slowly scaled up to 3.5-4" blade heavy duty folders when I worked outdoors
Now i'm into higher end production small 2" folders since I'm back behind a desk. But I'm keeping my 0550 though!

Like many my tastes have changed over time. Saying that is really just code for saying I am buying more expensive knives. For me the leap was big....SOG as an EDC to a William Henry with a Damascus blade. My wife got me the WH for my birthday. Obviously that was a great present. That WH knife got looking at better knives. Since then I have bought a few other good knives (BM, Spyderco and WH). I kept all of my older/cheaper knives but none of them get any pocket time these days.

Next up for my evolving tastes is probably a Sebenza or an AFCK if I can find a good one at the right price on the exchange or somewhere else.

Started out with Traditional Slipjoints, gifted by relatives, then changed gears somewhere to modern folders, and fixed blades, and now once again I've begun to take up Traditional, folders, and fixed blades. As the old saying goes, you wind up with what you started out with..... I've not lost interest in modern cutlery totally, it's just that I'm very nostalgic at the moment.

Yeah, I've gone from being happy with $30 hunting knives to now thinking I need $200 hunting knives! Thanks BF. ;)

I used to only get cheap knives, then found quality in kershaws. Then spydercos, then I got my first benchmade. In the appearance nothing has really changed, except now I really like orange knives.

I used to be a steel snob. Then I actually used a lot of super (hard) steels and decided that I prefer rolled edges to giant chips. :D YMMV

My tastes haven't really changed - only the steels most knife manufacturers have been using!

When I was a kid I preferred good old trusty 1095 carbon steel, but I didn't know why, I just loved how sharp my knife was and that I could resharpen it without much trouble.

When the 80's came around and more and more knives were made with stainless steel, and even the big name manufacturers used it, I had nothing but disappointment after disappointment in edge retention, ease of sharpening, etc., and over the years have bought more and more expensive knives in different steels, and was always disappointed with their usability.

By the 90's I just figured they didn't make knives like they used to anymore.

Thank goodness for discovering Morakniv, Old Hickory, and yard sales (picked up a Forgecraft high carbon slicer for 25 cents last year!), they have restored my faith in inexpensive, high quality blades.

I don't care if a knife looks fancy or tactical, I just want them to cut very well, hold an edge, and to be able to sharpen them without getting annoyed, so really my tastes haven't changed at all.

1095/UHB20c and Sandvik 12c27 to me are ideal for user knives because they are inexpensive, cut better than most of the expensive steels, and aren't frustrating to resharpen.

It's always changing, right now Victorinox Alox knives simply on my key ring are my number 1. I've realized an 84mm SAK will do 99% of my daily needs. Plus it will last forever, won't really rust and if I lose of damage it, it's no big deal.

Oh... and I have always preferred fixed blades, I would never carry a folder as my one and only knife in a disaster or survival situation.

You always end up with what you started with....
Well that explains the Kershaws I have and the one I'm getting in a trade and the few others I'm looking at.

Looks used to be priority #1. Now blade steel is #1, function #2, and looks #3. Nice thing is that usually when there's a knife with good steel and function, it's a pretty neutral look.

Started with a Buck 110 then CS, Kershaw then I found Spyderco. Now I'm really in to Benchmade.

Just got my first slipjoint and I'm liking it. In fact I can't look at a knife lately and not wonder if it will carve wood well or not. I guess I'm really getting stuch on anything that carves.

One thing has always remained the same though, I prefer non stainless. Whether it be simple high carbon or high end powder super steel, I'll take mine with a patina!

Yes I would say my tastes have changes drastically from when I first started collecting, I used to carry a Cold Steel Recon Tanto, a Recon 1 (tanto), and any other folder I thought would be the ideal "in-case I have to stab somebody" knife, now I have changed my philosophy for carrying a knife from "self-defense" to a because they are beautiful and I need cut things attitude :D which has caused my taste in knives to evolve.

My tastes fluctuate almost on a bi-weekly basis, one day I'll be in the mood for a large serrated blade the next for a small plain blade, I usually can't make up my mind so I carry three knives all the time, a small folder, and larger traditional, and a modern one handed opener. This has been working so far and having three options for any cutting task is a welcoming thought  and besides it's always smart to have a "sheeple" friendly knife available to cut some thread of your jeans.

I started out with a Buck my Grandpa gave me, then I I had a Leek for a long time. I have always carried a knife but was never really into knives so to speak. After joining this forum it opened my eyes to the world of knives. I know carry a BM 707, I am tempted to buy a lot of knives, but my 707 is doing fine. I really like the axis lock and probably will carry this knife foe a long time. I am more interested in learning to free hand sharpen more than anything at the moment.

Indeed they have.
I used to have a LARGE collection of cheap knives.
Then I found Kershaw and Spyderco.
I had a LARGE Collection of Kershaw there for a while because they were pretty well priced and good knives.
Then I traded for my first Benchmade...
Then I tried ZT.
Then I got a Super Blue Caly 3.5... then I traded for a CTS-XHP Manix 2....
Then I had to sell them all.
Then I started trading up.
Then I traded into a bunch of SAK's and a cheap Ka-Bar Dozier.
Then I started trading up again lol.
I have gone through the waves.
Now I have quite a few high end knives, rarely carry anything less than $100, am a sucker for Titanium, and love Frame Locks.
I still have a few SAK's and a Multi-Tool.
And some cheaper knives, because I do like to have a few around.

But a Kershaw JYD 2 at one point was an expensive folder for me. And I was a sucker for big beefy knives.
Now I EDC a CRK Large Sebenza 21 and like all around EDC folders and smaller tanks.

Tastes and views do change over time.

and now you just inquire on every knife on the forum :P Seriously, everytime I see something I dig, I see "Email sent" bladechick777 lmfao....

Me personally, (covers up and protects)

Cold Steel advocate
Benchmade
PRo Spyderco
Kershawwwwwwwww
Lion Steel
Now keeping a few and I mean 2-3 @ the most of what I dig from whomever and rotating it.

I also switched from lockers especially with flippers to slipjoints mostly gec but there are others I like as long as they are carbon steel especially 1095.

Went from cheapos gifted to me on holidays
To lower end Schrade and SOG
To Spydercos from China to Japan to US and back to Japan
To Kershaw/ZT
Benchmade grips
Currently: Emersons - Old Benchmades - CRK

And now considering a Strider. Its a slippery slope.

I started with traditional knives from the influence of my Grandpa. A Buck 112FG was the first knife I bought with my own money.

Then for some reason I became attracted to Spydercos, so I bought a Tenacious, then a Military, then a PM2....etc etc...

I bought or traded knives from most of the major brands.

Finally bit the bullet and bought a Sebenza with Ebony inlays....awesomeness...

A few months later I bought another Sebenza, this time with Ivory inlays. Admittedly, I was buzzed and I think Stevie Wonder subconsciously influenced me with his song "Ebony and Ivory". Honestly that was probably the best drunken "mistake" I ever made :D

Ah the old drunken knife purchase. I recently overpaid for a Spyderco Khukuri on eBay for the same reason. Cheers!

Like many here, my tastes progressed from junk to quality over the last 20 years.
I will say that in the last couple years, when it comes to fixed blades I have started to gravitate toward smaller lighter knives. While I will always pack a full size khukuri (or two;)) for a camping trip, it now gets left at camp when I go on hikes. Instead, a multi tool on my belt paired with a 3-5" bladed fixed blade will see 90% of the chores.
I have found the mostly irrational need to pack an "omgz I needz an uber chopper in case I getz lost an' need to build a log cabin to survivez!" giganto lopper is now outweighed by the urge to pack a nice sturdy blade while I talk slow short walks with my little girl and teach her what I know about the outdoors.
I still collect the big brutes, but a medium small Bushcraft-ish knife gets my attention.
