How influenced are you by .....

I'm not a huge impulse buyer when it comes to knives. I probably fall into the second category. When I decide that I want a new one I have a general idea of what I'm looking for. The comments and pictures posted here may influence me to want a knife that I was not aware of previously, but that doesn't mean that it will be my next knife or that I need to get one right away.

This forum has helped me get smarter about what I spend my knife money on. I've been exposed to makers and knife patterns that I didn't know about. It has helped me know what I'm looking for, instead of just having something catch my eye.

I don't necessarily buy what I see here but I've sure acquired some of my favorites, through what I've learned. Plus there's interaction with some of the finest folks there are. This forum rocks.

Thanks to all of you for being part of this fine community.:thumbup:

For something like twenty five years, I was perfectly content to quietly accumulate older slipjoints in great condition and squirrel 'em away with no thought of actually using the charmingly anachronistic old clunkers. I mean, you have to use two hands to open these things; they don't lock (and where's the pocket clip?), and they can actually rust. :barf:

Stumbling into this particular "Traditional" board changed everything for me. I still consider old knives with their original factory finishes more or less intact to be untouchable collectables, but now I'm completely hooked on contemporary slipjoints as EDC pocketknives. There's something indescribably satisfying about slowly "deploying" a knife that walks and talks like it has a soul of its own, using good lively carbon steel, and the feel and gradually maturing appearance of those wonderfully organic handle materials. I'm addicted - and I blame you. :D

Thanks, guys.

I'm not really impulsive, but I don't exactly plan it out, either. As to this place influencing me...absolutely. Seeing pics & reading about them sure causes one to wonder & want. Also, the friendships developed in another thing that one can't fully put into words.

I have to also add that many fine folks here offer up some nice trades &, me being the trading hound I am, I can't help myself. I've traded into most of my knives, including 4 of the 5 customs I have.

I certainly wouldn't have gotten into the other different makes that I have had it not been for this place.

..... the comments & pictures posted by members of this site? I'm sure we all take into account the good, bad, and ugly of the knives that get posted here, but how much does that influence your desire to actually buy, or not buy, any particular knife? Are you a disciplined buyer, who always knows what knife you want to buy next? Or do you just have kind of a general idea of what knife you'd be interested in, and use the pics/info to help make a final decision? Or are you like a bumblebee, flitting from flower to flower, and whatever knife you happen to be looking at at the moment could very well turn out to be your next purchase? Not sayin' one style is better than another ..... ;)

I must admit that I don't fall into the "disciplined" category - probably much more of the second & third type of buyer. How about you?

Over time I am I much more discriminating than I used to. I have approx 40 knives now, mostly traditional, but a mixed bag of sorts. There are some members that I trust their opinion without question, and others who may not like a knife that I am going to buy regardless what they say. Right now, I am a little fun money poor, so by no means is it time to buy a knife, just play with the ones I got. Besides, I am waiting for the 2010 forum knife. Yeah buddy!

I'm a frugal type of guy, so I try to get a good deal. However I find that the photos posted here are often better than the photos in a catalog, and that has influenced me to at least check out possible purchases.

I like to think I am not an impulse buyer (my wife might disagree). But, this forum has definitely shaped my buying habits. I only got into knives in August 2008. Then I only bought Spydercos. As of December 2009, I started reading this subforum. Since then, I have bought one Spyderco (a slipjoint at that) and focused mainly on traditional knives. To be honest, without the accumulated knowledge here, I would not have the small collection I have today. So, thanks!

Frequently I will come across a picture here that gets me fired up, so will go look for that knife.

How much am i influenced by what's posted in BF ?
Greatly ! i've 'met' knives here from companies i never knew existed.
i'd say influenced enough to have bought a few thousand knives. ya, i got it bad. serious case for sure. but thanks to BF i've learned a huge amount about a very wide variety of knives and have quite a collection that brings me much pleasure.
if you really want to be 'influenced', visit the 'Knifemakers For Sale' forums (Folders & Fixed Blades) and see how long you can stay on the sidelines before jumping in and buying customs at a few hundred $ each.

As others have said, posts here have increased my exposure to various knife makers I might not have considered otherwise, and I'll admit I've bought a few knives based on posts here. The various forums have pushed me over the edge from "accumulator" to "collector." In a less-positive light, there are makers I've been exposed to through this forum that I will no longer consider. Through bad luck, or differing perspectives or perceived needs, I've not found their products to be usable for me.

I still look at knives from the perspective of a user. If a knife won't meet my needs, won't satisfy the purpose (real or imagined) for which I obtained it, I probably won't keep it around. When a post or thread gets me to thinking about a purchase (OK, I admit it: when a post or thread triggers knife-lust), I force myself to recall the money wasted on knives that while beautiful, were simply not suited as users. The knife-lust usually passes; if it doesn't, I'll probably buy the knife.

But I still want a good English jack! :D

I'm not much for acquiring a ton of knives. I probably have fewer than 15 at any given time if you include my Leatherman Wave and Micra, and none of my slipjoints cost me more than $50.

However, I confess that the reprobates and ne'er-do-wells around these parts do influence what knives I carry.

My knife buying habits leaned heavily toward the high end uber-cool tacticals in the latest magazines. Then I started hanging out around here.....

Yeah, I think I've been influenced in my buying by the gang here:D:thumbup:

I am certainly influenced by this forum. I do make buying decisions based on reviews and pictures. I also use the Exchange for both sales and trades.

I'd say greatly influenced on certain levels. I have bought many knives mentioned by members that I may not have known about or thought about until somone showed a picture or did a review.

I'm not too influenced by what I see here, I've kind of found out what I really like over the years. Oh, I'll gawk and ooh and ahh over what I see, like in a museum or fine art gallery. But I'm happy with what I've got.

Having said all that, once in a while I'll see something here that makes me want to stray from my self imposed great downsizing I did. Like the knife Blues brought home from the last blade show with the shadow stag scales that he called a scout. Or the damascus and pearl peanut that someone posted. Just too damm pretty to ignore, they have me on the brink of buying on looks alone. When I see some of the customs, I feel like I'm walking real close to the edge. I used to collect custom fixed blades, like Randall's, Hendreckson, Hastings, but they were sold off as being too impractical. When I see an exeptional custom folder, I ralizw I actually can carry it, and that's when it gets dangerous for my checkbook.

I'm not sure how I'd break it to Karen.

"Look Honey, here's the new custom pocket knife I spent half my social security check on! No, No, not the frying pan! Owch!"

Carl.

Majorly impulse most times. I buy then think why later. This forum has been a great help in keeping the checkbook low. LOL

Reviews and pictures kill me at times. If I had a husband he'd beat me for sure. :D

This forum and particularly certain people (yes Elliot, Gus, and Charlie this means you:p) have HEAVILY influenced my Traditional buying.

Thanks to you lot the mortgage will take several extra years to finish:D
But it has been worth it.......:)
