My choice is a heavily loaded .475 Linebaugh or .500 Wyoming Express on the hip and a 71' Winchester in .450 Alaskan. However, you're approach is perfectly suitable and far less cumbersome.
when i was in kodiak i carried a .300 win mag rifle while hunting. i could shoot that. tried larger cal. - i'd almost rather get et by the bear, shoulder hurt for ages. a hit with the .300 is a lot better than a miss with a .475. that was before someone told me about the buddy system where you only needed to be faster than them. learned to always let the sr. officer take point too.
i asked one of the local esquimaux what they used for kodiak bear hunting. he said a .22, trick is to sneak up on the bear and poke the muzzle in his ear as you fire. he admitted exaggerating a bit. he really used a .22 magnum.
