How long do you keep a new knife...

Immediately. I finally decided to get a 940 Osborne. Arrived a few weeks ago. I flipped it a few times and knew it’s not for me.

Production and second hand knives I mainly buy for every day carry and start using them from day one. The majority of my vintage knives never see any use and are I only bought to collect and keep. With customs I am careful before I start using them because of their value. Some get used, some never.

....until you decide its a keeper? With most of mine I knew immediately of I was keeping it or not. Only a few have been questionable for me. Some I know right away they aren't going to work. So how about you?
Like you, I know almost immediately. It only takes a few minutes of handling until I'm pretty sure whether I'll carry & use it, or pass it along.

When a knife arrives I look on the back of the box for the expiration date/time frame and just tack on 2 weeks to that ;)

Not many stand the test of time with me, as a lot of guys and gals will attest to. The newness wears off pretty fast it seems and I find fault, albeit quite minor and most likely unnoticeable by the general public, but glaring to me after I finally spot the flaw.

Now, the word flaw would seem to mean there was something intrinsically wrong with the knife, that is far from it, as it is more that the said 'Flaw' resides deep within myself and there isn't any quick fix for that !

A few knives have held fast, but mainly the Swiss Army Knives brand which most consider more as tools than knives and I'd agree as my main use lies with the tools they sport.

Right now the "Knives" that are sticking around the longest are;

SAK Executive, one of the oldest knives I've owned
Bradford USA sheepsfoot in 3v
Hogue Ritter fixed blade in S45vn
Giantmouse Dapper in m390
MKM Root with wood inlay in m390 blade

There are others that I have but they don't seem to be carried daily as much, recent purchase as a Civivi Imperium with micarta scales and damascus blade, that's very nice...for now ;)

So, probably didn't answer as succinctly as I should have, but I am prone to carry on...

Interesting question, I keep most of the knives that I buy but many do not stay as my EDC very long for one reason or another. I think that my current EDC, since last December, has been the longest that I have carried a single knife, I won’t say it it is “THE ONE” but it does check pretty much all of the boxes for me.

I know it's a keeper as soon as I use it

If the ergos and the blade shape/ design work for my daily tasks then it's a keeper for me

Depends on the knife.

I still own most of knives that I've ever purchased, including a Buck 110 that I bought over 50 yrs ago when I was a teenager.

However, I have sold some knives almost immediately if they "bugged" me for one reason or another. I also recently sold about 100 knives (that owned for at least 3-4 years) that I no longer felt belonged in my collection.

I got tired of reselling knives. I did too much fancy buys and needed to do too much reselling. It lost its fun. Now, I prefer gifting (to people genuinely interested) or just letting them rest in drawers and boxes. The funny thing is a long discarded and forgotten knife may appeal again to you some day....

I am pretty specific in what I buy, I keep almost everything but I have given a few away to friends. I have never sold a knife.

I keep everything I buy. But I also buy everything with the intent to keep it.

If the knife is just OK, I will still cycle it in and out of carry, or just use it around the house as a beater.

I only buy knives to keep or as gifts. Only time I ever traded one was a long long time ago at work when a guy who worked at a place I was doing some consulting work said "Hey, want to drop knives?" Meaning lets trade knives sight unseen. It was kind of cool, he got a Case stockman as that was about all I carried back then and for the life of me I can't remember what I got. But it was a fair trade, no trickery involved.

If I'm dropping down the money to purchase it, I already know if it's a keeper.
That's why it's extremely rare you see me with a "for sale" post in the Exchange.

Never sold a knife. Either I keep it because I like it or I keep it as solid reminder why I didn't like it.
I like that. Or perhaps give it away to someone you could trust with cutlery if space is running out. Knives multiply fast, you know. :D

First off I am a Archer. Bought my first good knife when I went off into the woods. Helle Eggen nice knife. I have not sold any of my Bows, Arrows, Knives etc.

Did they give you a coin in return?
I sometimes include a coin with the knife, for knives as gifts, but in most cases if you're giving someone the gift of a knife and it's not sticking out of them, they're pretty grateful. When I gave someone my old US Army Utility Knife I practically had to pay them to take it, because those things are so bad.
