How long does a coating of wd40 last?

Spectrum analysis of the famous WD40 it is what it is.

Nonane is a linear alkane hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C 9 H 20. It is a colorless,
flammable liquid, occurring primarily in the component of the petroleum distillate fraction commonly called kerosene.

Decane is an alkane hydrocarbon with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)8CH3.
75 isomers of decane exist, all of which are flammable liquids. Decane is one of the components of gasoline.

Tridecane is a paraffin hydrocarbon C13H28; especially the liquid normal hydrocarbon CH3(CH2)11CH3 obtained from petroleum.

Tetradecane is - a paraffin hydrocarbon C14H30

Mineral oil is a colorless and odorless oil that's made from petroleum: a by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline.
It's long been used as a common ingredient in lotions, creams, ointments, and cosmetics, inexpensive, and helps reduce water loss from the skin.

Regardless of these facts, I doubt that you actually need to use something like WD-40 to coat your knives, when something as simple as Camellia oil will do, .

... except that Camellia Oil seems to be about four times as expensive as WD-40,
and far fewer places sell it! Even 7-Eleven sells WD-40!

That’s not the case where I live, where WD-40 is about 1.25 times as expensive as Camellia oil, per liter, and given that the Camellia oil is pure oil and WD-40 isn’t even half, I’d say that for storage of knives, using Camellia oil is a lot more cost effective. But, as you point out, WD-40 is a lot easier to come by.
