How long does it take you to grind your bevels?

I remember running to work one day after about 30 knives telling my boss I ground a blade in an hour! Thats a 3 /12" blade so you will speed up with time I promise:thumbup:

I timed myself this morning.
I ground 4 blades to 60 grit in an hour.
1 WIDE 5.5" camp digger 3/16" stock
1 7 1/2" TTW Camp knife 3/16" stock
2 small 3 1/2" blade paring knives 3/32" stock

Finger is burnt though but thats a constant thang:D

When I girnd I usually do batches and probably work on 20-30 blades at a time going through each grit...[I grind 60-120 and 220 before ht....I would say a 4" droppoint in 1/5" takes a total of 6-8 mins.

im relearning how to grind again but i can tell im faseter now then i was
went from a 1x41 delta to a 2x72 KMG
so i ll have to get back to you on my times

I'm with psycho78 here, except I have the equipment, but not enough time. If I was any slower, my knives would be heat treated by global warming! :o :D

I once watched John Fitch grind a huge bowie blade in about 5 minutes. He has a homemade 5 hp grinder and he just leaned into it. It was awe inspiring, and depressing, both at the same time.

Myself, I'm a hobbyist at best, and I take a LONG time to grind one blade. I grind a little and look at it, grind some more, and look at it, etc.......

I just got my KMG variable speed this week. Ain't it a grand contraption? I am working a lot faster than before, but as to the comment about dgrinding 30 blades at a time, i will be lucky if i ever make that many good knives in a year!!!! I have 5 ground out to varying stages now, but that i because i had some time off and was a forging fool while i was waiting for the KMG to arrive:D

Big John was the first guy i saw usig the big magnet to hold the blade at the 'O5 Piney Wooods Hammer-in. i bout a magnet after that. He ripped out a cutting competition type blade in nothing flat. I also saw John Horrigan hog out the hole in the handle for a hidden tang in about 2-3 min using a handle broach. It is somewhat intimidating watching those guys work...lol:thumbup:

I'm S-L-O-W. I'll usually take hours to get a blade to where I'm happy with it. I also usually end up going back and re-grinding after the first 20-30 minutes of hand sanding a few times as I find things that won't easily hand-sand away. Of course, I'm forging and I tend to have the right bevel be at a slightly different angle than the left bevel (looking at the knife from the spine). I'm working on that. Once I improve my working on the far side of the anvil and even up my forging a bit I'll do less "fix-up" on the grinder.

Sometimes I think I'm trying to be too much of a perfectionist too, but then I disregard that thought since if I'm going to do it, I shouldn't settle for less than I'm happy with.

I haven't tried just stock removal yet. I should try to just grind one out and see how it looks and how fast I do it...

As long as it takes, and maybe longer sometimes.

Yeah, Ed, but you still have to grind like a new smith because you leave the blade as thick as us amateurs do, albeit for a slightly different reason.....lol

  Simple but true Ed

Ceramic belts have speeded my grinding up because they dont dull as fast so I grind more at one sitting :)

Thanks for the tip Brian!

I tried some Norton ceramic belts this morning, using the 10" wheel on the Grizzly (the faster belt speed helps a lot!). Went from a 60 grit straight to a 220 grit. All 3/16" D2. Cut down my times tremendously. Took approx. 14 to 17 mins per knife -beats 1 hour per knife! (Had to push a lot harder too).

I ground these 3 out for a friend:
