How long will my knife languish in Customs?

Hi there. Sorry if this is off topic but I couldn't figure out a better place to post it. I also realize the question is ridiculous, before I ask it.
A gentleman from Ottawa mailed me a knife on the 6th. It was recorded as inbound into New Jersey on Monday, the 17th. (I live in California.) I called the United States Postal Service who said it usually takes between 2-4 days for U.S. Customs to process the item but can take up to 45 days.

What has been the experience time-wise of people from the U.S. who have had knives shipped from Canada?
I know it hasn't been that long but not knowing if it's going to arrive in 2 days or 2 weeks is anxiety-provoking. This was a trade and the gentleman received his knife on Monday.

Anyone have any experience in this regard? Someone was kind enough to e-mail me that his usual wait is 8-14 days. Sound about right?

I live in NY and have purchased from a Canadian purveyor on a number of occasions. I've never had any kind of delay.

3 weeks for me to get a knife in California from Thailand...2 weeks to get one from Germany. Pretty good times as far as I'm concerned, at least I got the knives.

OK, I called USPS and they said it was unusual for nothing to happen 5 days after arrival in the U.S. (for a Priority Mail package.) They suggested I contact the sender to contact Canada Post to initiate an inquiry, which I just did. This was a trade and he seems like an honest guy but I tend to assume the worst and what I'm thinking is the knife (Gold-class Benchmade Griptilian) is now "lost" or stolen.
We also agreed to list the value of the knives as much less than the actual value to avoid extra fees. I'm never doing that again. Next time, and every time, it's going to be FULL PRICE listed, insured, tracking, signature/delivery confirmation. Naturally he received his knife problem-free on Monday. I know I'm overreacting and this is turning into a rant so I'll stop. It's just frustrating.

When you do trade's you can list full price of whats being shipped. You didn't buy it, there for you don't have to pay fee's on it.
Your more or less getting a gift.

Edited to add, Ya relax! sometimes it takes weeks to get a package over the boarder and out to the west coast from the east...

I live in California, and got a knife sent to me by a good forum m8 from Canada, he paid for 8 day mail or something like that.

It took 8 days to get here not counting the day he mailed it out.
(granted I managed to mess everything up by giving the wrong address, and it went back to Canada, but the dude I traded with is a stand up guy, so I have absolutely no problems with him.)

I've had a few come from Canada to the USA. My advice is to remain patient. Some have made it here within days and others took a month but they all arrived.
Give it time.

I traded a Spyderco Endura for a Delica to a guy in the Netherlands; I live in the U.S. (NY). The person in the Netherlands received the Endura about two weeks after I sent it. However, I didn’t receive the Delica until 2.5 – 3 MONTHS after he shipped it. Fortunately, I have been on the forums with him for several years and I knew he wasn’t trying to screw me over – he is certainly one of the good guys! He was just about to buy a new Delica and have it sent to me right before it arrived! We were both very relieved when it got here as he said he was literally going to buy the knife with-in the next day or so. I have also had issues with Canadian/US Customs hence I won’t buy/sell/trade (for the most part) outside the Continental US. I hope this helps.

“My advice is to remain patient.”
+1
