How many of you carry this combo and what combo do you carry? I used to just carry a swiss army knife, then got a swisstool. So i paired a swisstool & pocket knife up. Now i carry a custom fixed blade & camper. But for christmas i'm getting a leatherman surge (anyone carry one?) and i'll be carrying this with my fixed blade. Do you guys rotate carry for in the woods? Here's what i have that i bring into the woods, barely any of my collection, but still enough.

-JK Seraphim (custom blade i designed & john executed amazingly)
-Buck 110
-Victorinox Camper or Swisstool or Swisschamp
-Mora Clipper
-Puma White Hunter

So, not much but thats what i carry. I used to carry a buck 110, swisstool & swisschamp, or substitute the 110 for my JK.

Here's my setup. Its a RatManDu by Swamp Rat Knifeworks. I pair it up with a Victorinox Spirit and a Misch Firesteel for the woods. The sheath is a custom job by Eric Lind at Mashed Cat Outfitters who made it possible to attach the Maxpedition magazine pouch so I can carry the knife, multitool, and ferro rod all in one unit. I love it.

the spirit looks like a nice multi tool. I mainly wanted my multis (but also have been wanting a swisschamp since i was little) for multiple tools. Since all the tools i use between the swisschamp & swisstool are on the surge, with the acception of the tweezers, i figured i could cover all my bases without feeling like i'm leaving anything behind, and still have a useful tool. The fixed blade will do most of the cutting though. I need to get a ferro rod or something, looks more useful than a lighter when its windy or it gets wet. I like the sheath & knife too.

I have several fixed blades and rotate them due to percived need and/or mood, but my Leatherman Wave remains constant.

Here's the Ultralight setup I used in my 5 days hiking trip last fall:

(lost the Mora and sheath on the morning of the last day...grrr...)

I'm constantly trying to find a lighter, better setup. I pretty much know what works for me as far as what to pack in my pack. Spring/Summer for instance i pack bug spray, where as fall/winter i do not.

Yeah, I gave it away.

I've been a Leatherman fan for 20 or so years. But this one sucks. Lost the springy thingy that holds in the interchangeable blades (saw and file but also the screwdriver bits) multiple times. Gave up on it. If I can't rely on it, why carry it?

It also weighs as much as my duty pistol.

I replaced it with Supertool 300.

There is a reason Leatherman brought back the Supertool. I'm sure I'm not the only guy who didn't like the Surge.

I hope I like it. I got the bit kit, extender adapter, clip and the surge. I'd be bummed out if it was POS. I hated the original supertool. I got my dad a supertool 300 for this christmas and i have to say it is nice, it's really light too.

I have a fixed blade, and multi-tool that also came with a flashlight, that all use the same sheath, that I got from the NRA that I keep in my truck. But I do not carry it on me.

I am probably one of the biggest (if not biggest) multitool fanatics on this website. I own dozens and dozens of multitools. I truly believe that a multitool is not that useful in the woods compared to a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) as it is in different scenarios. The main tools you would use on your multitool are the pliers, saw, awl, and scissors. The main tasks would be using the pliers as pot holders and repairs. The blade too, but most people carry a stronger knife that can handle a myriad of tasks. A Victorinox One Handed Trekker or Farmer are truly the best things to supplement a good fixed blade in my opinion.

How did you lose it? Sheath failure?

More precisely, sheath clip failure:

I clipped it upside down at the bottom of my pack strap and the clip must have been pryed open when I took my pack off and put it back on. Even though the tek-lok are a little heavier, I think they're worth it. Either this, or maybe a redundant paracord loop along with the G-clip.

+1

I think it took me about three trips in the woods with a Leatherman to realize that it was a totally worthless item to take along. I could replace that weight with an extra shot or two of scotch instead. :D

I always have at least 2 fixed blades (1 large 1 small any of several), A folder, and a multitool (currently the SOG powerplier).

The multitool is an integral part of my improvisation kit.

Depending where I'm going I'll carry a Leatherman Wave or a Victorinox Hunter or Trailmaster. For a Fixed blade, a Cold Steel Master Hunter, Becker Necker, or NWA 2007 BFSK (Blade Forums stamped Sierra Scout).

Good luck with the new Surge. I got one because the price was insane and I have other multitools that get used often. I was a little taken back by the weight, on the heavy side. It now lives in my car as a back up. Just a bit to heavy and bulky for EDC.

I always have a SOG Powerlock a folder and at least one fixed blade. The folder and Fixed blade(s) are rotated depending on mood and the area I'm in. Last trip my fixed blade was a Black Kraton handled Kabar and a Hawk. Can't remember which folder I had.
