How many carry a multi tool & fixed blade every outting?

I love my Surge.Yes it's heavy but worn as a neck knife I forget it's there. With the lanyard clip I can remove it with one hand use it with the same one hand and return to my neck with one hand.Awesome neck knife for utility IMO.I'm into neck knives and have a few customs but that Surge or any leatherman or Swiss tool are really modern miracles.Cut your nails, cut some wire, fix a hose in your truck, fillet a fish and cut some wood for tent stakes while adjusting the scope on your rifle and fixing your glasses with that tiny but handy screwdriver.Too cool.I love the things.

Mountain biking, the Surge has saved my butt several times.Surge plus Ax,hatchet,Big heavy bowie, machete or khukuri and you could survive indefinitely. Our ancestors made due with hand axes of stone, if we can't be comfortable with a chopper and a leatherman we must be dumber than a caveman.

If you use any folding tool like a heavy duty screwdriver or wrench you'll mess it up if you're strong enough.I bent up the little screwdriver holder myself and snapped something using it like a pry-bar.Leatherman fixed it no questions asked.Took about a week turnaround time. It's been over a year and it's still like new so I'm happy with it.
I like the bigger pliers and increased leverage for turning big bolts, bending thick metal and cutting bigger wire. The few ounces of extra weight is worth it to me.
I'm 250 pounds a few ounces either way is not a big deal.

I'm pretty sure all of us carry a fixed blade knife outdoors. I usually carry a multi tool as well. Out of the ones I have, I settled on the Leatherman Blast because it's full size with a good set of tools, but only weighs 6 oz.

I carry the same Leatherman, the Blast

I like it so much I put one on my duty belt and it has it's place both in urban environments and in the bush :)

I have a Vic One Hand Trekker i bought specifically for woods use, along with a fixed blade.

Though i often EDC it too.

For work, my fixed blade is a Mad Dog PATAK...I've gone back and forth between the Vic Spirit multitool or a Leatherman Charge Ti. I like the Charge for the needlenose pliers and the toobit kit (which gets used more often than I expected). However, the Spirit has been taking over lately and is the multitool I take for my outdoor activities if I end up taking a multitool.

Yeah, I gave it away.

I've been a Leatherman fan for 20 or so years. But this one sucks. Lost the springy thingy that holds in the interchangeable blades (saw and file but also the screwdriver bits) multiple times. Gave up on it. If I can't rely on it, why carry it?

It also weighs as much as my duty pistol.

I replaced it with Supertool 300.

There is a reason Leatherman brought back the Supertool. I'm sure I'm not the only guy who didn't like the Surge.

THIS POST IS EXACTLY RIGHT! I've had a LM surge since '07 or so ... It lives in my glove box because it is too heavy to carry on the belt; epecially not in my pocket...It feels more bulky than my GLOCK 27, that I carry IWB everywhere (including hiking)...It is certainly heavier/bulkier than an extra loaded GLOCK 27, 9-rd .40S&W magazine...

If you must have a leatherman to augment your fixed blade get the LM wave which is much lighter; however I think for hiking a SAK is a much lighter/more useful alternative...I agree with the poster that the the surge is good for biking repairs...but thier are specialized bike MTs that are purpose built and better.

The surge is a robust tool...just not purpose built for hiking...

Interesting thread buddy. I don't think about these things day in and day out as I also have other interests\hobbies. But I'm glad that you brought this up as you helped me to clue in to a better set up. I totally forgot that my Leatherman Blast was in the storage area under my motorcycle seat. I took it out and oiled it along with a Rucksack SAK that I'm fond of. I got to thinking, (always a slow and painful process:D). And I've concluded that the Blast is a better multi tool for just about any inside\outside job, over my beloved SAK, well..this model anyway. I sure don't know it all and half of what I did know is probably forgotten:D, so thanks for the reminder. The blast will either go with me in pocket, bag, or in sheath pouch. I forgot about this booger but it's back in the line up again.

A lot of you mention the blast, but i just can't wrap my mind around the cheap look. I don't like how theres plastic around the handles, it just looks like a walmart cheapie. I think my most favored multi right now is my camper, i thought it would be useless with the corkscrew & not a phillips, but i grab it before i leave the house without even thinking now. Very useful. The huntsman ruby lite would probably beat the camper out for pocket time though.

I love my leatherman wave for work, but it's just too heavy for how little use I get out of it in the woods.

I carry a Bark River PSK in a KSF pocket sheath instead, and get a lot more use out of it.

If I could find a multitool that I liked as much as the Wave that weighed less, I'd be all over it.

i edc a leatherman wave and usually have my fallkniven wm-1 along as well.

when off into the wilds, i'll add in my fallkniven S1 and will shortly acquire a wetterlings hatchet and a machete to round out my wilderness cutlery load-out.

if i'm heading off with strangers (or people i KNOW won't have a knife with them, or will only have a blunt blade), i toss a mora clipper in my pack as my loaner/beater.

Seriously though, I don't even carry this purty one. The one I carry is the standard stainless version. For a mere 6 ounces, you get a very serious set of tools. Considering that the Leatherman Juice and SAK Trekker weigh in at roughly 4.5 oz each, this really is a large step up for only 1.5 oz more.

Leatherman Charge TTi

Lone Wolf T2 Ranger

Always

Busse Basic 11 and my Off the Map The Bushcrafter added for overnight camping.

I usually carry:

-Juice S2 or Skeletool
-Folder Spydie Resilience or Tenacious
-Big Blade B11 or Kukri

I carry a Winkler Knives belt knife and a Gerber Multy tool. They are life savers.

With that in mind, I always have a pair of Labs with me. The smaller chocolate one is "good" at finding chollas. I have to carry a nice pair of needlenose pliers to remove the resulting spines from him.

Otherwise, I also carry a Mora #1 and a SAK Recruit. I've never had an ocasion where this wasn't a good combo.

Nobody's carrying a 6 inch visegrips with SAK?

I've been debating the whole multi tool vs sak thing over in my mind for the last couple days.

timely thread thanks.
