How many H1 knives do you own?

Two Ladybugs. One hawkbill and one plain edge. Keep on keyfobs as backup edc as well as my Paramilitary2 edc. Is there an AA for knife Ho's?

Only got one - PE Salt 1.

It was my first Spyderco and I'll never get rid of it. I gave it the Krein FFG treatment and it is my go-to summer EDC. So light and wicked sharp.

I just have one, a Pacific. It is one of the most comfortable knives I own to carry and use. I guess it's the old Endura grip, but whatever, it fits my hand perfectly and the 14mm hole is great.

none yet. ive been meaning to pick up a serrated ladybug sometime. it'll work well as a keychain/backup knife since all my edcs are plain edge.

Um

2 Tasmans PE Yellow
Atlantic Black PE
Mariner

4 (?) I thought it was more, let me dig.

PE Dragonfly

USN Version Catcherman

I've got 5, Tasman, Pacific, Spyderhawk, ladybug and a Warrior. Soon I'll add the ladybug Hawkbill H1 and for sure the new H1 Dragonfly when available.

H1 is the answer to an unasked question. If someone has problems with VG10 or S30V blades rusting, well, they're basically storing their knives in a bath of battery acid and salt water. Sure, H1 is rustproof. Big deal. It also (by all reports I've read) has awful edge holding properties compared to other Spyder steels. So it's not worth the lessened edge retention for what you're gaining in corrosion resistance. Not if you take halfway decent care of a "normal" stainless Spydie bladesteel alloy.

There's no "there" there. Take a pass on the whole H1 lineup unless you plan to store your knife in an old car battery. :(

I have a one H1 knife a PE salt 1 (older version) and the edge retention is ok I agree. Nothing to brag about, but for people not used to sharpening and getting into knives I have found the steel to be a great introduction since it has minimal maintenance required for a newbie.

However I posted recently about Nitrobe 77 in the Spyderco forum and Sal mentioned they contacted ERASTEEL to get a sample for testing and maybe we can get a mule team. The steel has very similar properties but is made through the powdered approach. Des Horn a well known custom maker holds the steel in high regard.

With this steel it might be possible to have a FFG blade of a highly corrosive resistant steel at high HRC giving good (maybe great) edge retention in PE as well.

Salt 1, PE. The edge holding abilities of H1 in plain edge are actually kind of sub par, but it's easy to touch up.

- YL Ladybug3 Salt, plain, in survival kit
- C88YL Salt I, plain, in backpack
- C91BBK Pacific Salt, on person

I remember a while back a few people had their H1 blades reground. Wonder if they can give any input on edge retention with the new grind?

4 here: Salt 1, Rock Salt, Ladybug 3 H1, Tasman Salt.

Wouldn't say i collect them, they just landed up in my collection. Vg-10 steel is adequate for my needs.

No need to justify my friend, we all share the same addiction here! ;)

I got my H1 knives because I usually travel to Florida or the Caribbean once a year and wanted various sized folders for when I'm by the beach, on the water, etc. I don't use them otherwise. Like yourself, VG-10 is fine the rest of the time.

Dude, it's pretty arrogant to say something is useless just because you don't need it for your current activities. Try saltwater fishing or scuba diving with a VG10 or S30v blade and see if having better corrosion resistance still an "unasked question".

Plus, I don't know of any other steel thats edge holding in the SE configuration exceeds that of S90V and ZDP-189, yet literally can be bent 90 degrees without breaking. Insane toughness. The only truly rust-proof steel in current use. Serrated edge gets work hardened to 67-68 Rc without any risk of chipping....yeah, that really "sucks" compared to other steels. Now, name me one that can accomplish ONE of those feats, much less all of them. Even in PE, the edge holding's not all that bad...about on par for the lower end spydie steels like Gin-1 or 8cr13. And in exchange for such insane toughness and corrosion resistance, I'd say that's still impressive. And in SE (the preferred format), it is a very impressive steel, by all accounts.

As for the question, I just have a Ladybug salt at this point, which fits nicely in my swimming trunks for when I go to the beach or swim in the pool. I'm looking to get a few more though...Right now I'm interested in the Atlantic Salt, Salt 1 and Pacific Salt, all in SE.
