How many is too many?

Every month I have a new favorite grail knife which is the best knife I ever owned and my most favorite in my collection.

How is that possible? I have been going on like this for years. Every month I am so happy with the best knife a man can have. 2-3 weeks later I find some other new knife. The hunting down the new grail knife is fun.

I also watch to many youtube videos on knife reviews late at night.

For me personally double digits is too many. I downsized to four folders and I feel better. Although I am considering getting a Southern Grind Spider Monkey. If I get that then one of my four will probably be sold to maintain total of four.

Once before you were kind enough to post a picture and explain why these knives. Would you be willing to do it again in this thread?

You have a ways to go. Some may say that you have too many of one brand and are in danger of becoming a low rent equivalent of a Randall or Case peanut collector, but it's your money.;) Do what you want with it. My limited experience with the brand tells me that you are probably not going to regret buying a Benchmade.

It has never been about a certain number for me, I really don't know how many I own. I know I have some I never use I just enjoy the craftsmanship and the aesthetics of the knife, others many others I use. Your opening post used the word"collection" which means an accumulation, there is no finite number. As a collector and user I buy knives that I like or has some collectability to it.

I have areas I like in fixed blades, traditional folders, flippers and just interesting knives. The important thing is I have never sacrificed family financial obligagations to my hobby. I am to the point now I can either sell or trade off a knife (rarely) for something I don't have.

We are not unique in our hobby, every other serious hobbyist does the same thing be it collecting marbles, automobiles, purses, stamps, coins, you get the idea. First and foremost do what you like in this hobby there are no set rules dealing with numbers you own, but above all else just enjoy!

Once you start feeling guilt over how much you've bought. That for me happened about 40 knives ago. Trying to downsize, but it's so hard letting go of some of them

There is no such thing as " too many knives ", that's like thinking you've got too much money.

It's all is driven by your obsession/addiction. Some folks can control it better than others. That's all.

Well, from practical point of view not more than three folders. Like with watch - one for suit, one for every day, and one heavy duty for outdoor. But it is hobby, so it's never too many, it's always not enough :)

That is not a collection, it's a day of the week set. :)

Once you start putting them in storage containers and stacking them in a closet then you might think you have too many knives.

Fascinating. I really liked most all responses to your question in this thread. They cover the full spectrum of possibilities in this pursuit. Still working diligently on my answer!

I'm new to knives having just started this past August 2016.
At "start time," I had 5 blades ranging from my oldest one as a 10th birthday gift (I'm now retired), to a raffle "win" early this year. Since August I've purchased 4 new knives, the 5th new one is on the way. One of the new ones was a "mistake," and I'll keep it as a reminder to be careful.

Thanks to all for your very informative and interesting answers. A fun read, and a great thread for a knife newbie!

This is my current collection of pocket knives, (I just started this year).

I was thinking about a ZT 0450 next. I don't really need it, but man is it addictive. How many pocket knives is too many?

For me, any knife that I don't have a specific role and function is too many. Pretty much I have 3 classes of pocket knives, EDC(BM 940-2), Hard use EDC(ZT 0566BW) and hard use knife(ZT 0560BW). I currently have one extra that can fit into hard use EDC or Hard use(BM 551-1) and that is plenty for me. Anymore would feel useless as they don't have a function, and knives to me are tools... So why have a tool that doesn't have a function. So my answer is you don't need more than 4-5.

My opinion is... It depends on what you do in your life. If you just work and go home you probably only need one or two. If you go to work, school, visit cities, hunt, fish, camp, cook, dress up for meetings, work on your own stuff, etc. then you probably could justify having 10 or more knifes for the situations specifically.

Do I think having tons of knives is stupid? No. Everyone has an addictive tendancy so you might as well have a useful collection that you can sell if you need to.

Too many knives? I have no idea but I'll let you know when I reach that point.

Accumulating knives is not a numbers thing to me. I have been attending the Blade Show most years since 2000 and many years in the 1991-1999 time period if that tells you anything.

OCD stands for "Obsessive compulsive Disorder"

Whatever you do with passion only becomes a "Disorder" when it adversely affects your life.

The thing to keep in mind is that you can immerse yourself in any legal activity until it adversely affects your every-day life or those around you. By all means acquire all the knives you want . . .but don't spend the rent money and think twice before giving one to your S-O for your anniversary.

One last thought:
The old (very old) slogan for what used to be called MTV was something like, "Too much is never enough!"
