Guinness says the record is over 2,000, but they have specific criteria about what counts (ie. no dupes). Some here would laugh at that number. I would worry that my house is not built to handle a live load of that magnitude.

One of my favorite collecting stories comes from Preston’s A Dinosaur in the Attic. The book is a history of NYC Museum of Natural History. At one point the Museum was involved in smuggling a bird collection out of England. The private collector had amassed a massive collection of mounted birds (iirc 3 million items) which filled his entire family’s castle, and included a number of extinct examples. They purchased the collection and then quietly moved it to the U.S. to avoid possible government interference.

This happens early in the 20th century. By government interference, they probably feared the kind of nonsense that happened with T Rex Sue during the Clinton administration. Where an excellent tyrannosaurus fossil was seized as an “American Indian artifact”(?!?)
