I hunt and fish and LOVE knives, while I would love to own as many as possible I own five plus a couple of leathermans. I have 3 high quality frame lock folders and 2 high quality fixed blades.

I feel as though a I NEED 3 to 5 more folders and 3 to 5 more fixed blades minimum. I do not consider myself a collector. Do I need more, does this make me a collector as I have yet to use some of the knives I own, although I do plan on eventually using every knife I currently own and plan on buying in the future?

Bottom line I am gonig to keep buying despite how many I wind up with, but I'd like to know some opinions on how many you feel you need and thoughts about what constitues a collector or collection?

Thanks

You always has needs for one more, but you only have two hands, so somewhere between 40 and 50 might be OK, above that is considered a hobby.

The problem is that all the makers release new models all the time.
Look a Mora, they made the same exact knife since men started walking on two legs, so you just needed to buy one for each generation, grandpa might use his knife at the same time as you. Now there are a whole bunch of different models, and you have to have them all. :)

Knife collection is the grown up answer to Pokemon. Got to have them all.

Lets see, you need two in the car, four in the tool box, at least one outdoor knives in the kitchen, two in your backpack, one in your belt, two in your pockets etc etc etc.
If you have a farm, multiply that with twenty.

Do you need more? Realistically, probably not. You probably have a range of knives that cover most tasks that you will encounter.

I love knives but don't consider myself a collector. A knife nut would be more appropiate or it's my hobby. Hobby being fined as "An activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure."

I own 2 fixed blades, 7 folders, and 3 multitools. I will get more knives. As someone *relatively* new to this hobby, I'm still sorting out what I like and dislike. I know I hate slipjoints. I prefer framelocks or lockbacks over liner locks. I'm now more educated on the better types of steel. My heavy duty hiking/camping folder is different then my EDC knife. As I get other knives, the ones I don't use or replace will end up on the 'bay.

Thats a question I used to hear a lot from my wife. (She has since given up asking). Bare bones for me would be.

1. Chefs Knife
2. Paring Knife
3. Fillet Knife
4. Hunting Knife
5. Two Boning knives.
6. Carry Folder
7. 12 Inch Machete.
8. Good Hatchet.

That for me would be the least I could thrive with. If I could only have one knife period, It would have to be a 7-8 inch flexible Boning knife.

I have found that less is more.

I think I could probably get away with only 1, a swiss army knife may not be the sharpest knife, be all that long, have great steel or even a great blade shape, but its adequate and its got your basic blade, nail file (something I need so I dont bite my nails), scissors and its pretty much impossible to construe as a weapon.

Right now I have 6, 2 of which are duplicates (ie backups). I could easily get away with having only 1.

The Question is MOOT...It's like asking "How Many Beers Do You Need" Or TV or Radio Stations... How many knives you NEED is One! The One you are using are at any given moment. A Question just as hard to answer is: "How many Knives Do You WANT?"

How many pockets ya got? One for each of those. :)
Then times 2 so you can rotate'em.
Several that you keep pristine, so you can show'em off.
Several with 'unusual' characteristics (Okapi ring-lock, Opinel, Navaja) so your audience doesn't lose interest.
One special EDC folder that you carry for years, to hand down to your kid(s) when you're gone ("This was Dad's knife...").
How many is that?

NEED? You do realize this is a knife forum?! :p

Anyway, I need two, one small sheath knife like my Western little finn, and one Folder like one of my TL-29's.

Need:

- one folder for EDC
- one saw, folding saw or hatchet for yard limbs

nce you put that needle in your arm you are lost

add those crystals to the pipe

sniff that white powder

buy that first knife

same o same o

Just one more. And then after that one, Just one more......................repeats

I'd probably do fine with a Tramontina Bolo and a Mora 740MG. I've sworn off knives many a time but if I see something I like I end up giving in and buying it

the more the merrier! I like to choose a blade for each individual cutting task. I unroll a tool roll and lay out my blades like a surgeon does with his operating tools.

Lets see.......one knife of every blade style, dozens of handle materials, and every carbon steel under the sun! then I would have enough! ;)

I have found that the need is endless. I would buy one knife, and decide that it is the last knife I will buy. Then I would find another knife a week later, with better steel, some better advantages, etc... and convince myself that I need it and eventually buy it. It's a never ending cycle.

Ditto, taurn. I can't afford to keep going like this (being a single parent), but I can't stop, I'm a knife junky. No one knife does it all and they keep coming out with better ones. I see a RAT-3 in your picture. I have just started my collection of RAT knives. Up to 3 so far.
