How Many Knives Do You REALLY Need?

Hmmmm interesting question. I have been selling off my knives recently after asking myself just that...

Most of my collection is made up of customs at this point.

I have some favorites, some "go to knives". Very few are sitting not having been used. I rotate through them. I have one chopper, a hand axe, and a bunch of 4-5 inch knives. A couple Leatherman waves, and a SAK. I won't get rid of my new nessie, my keppy, my Koyote EDC, heck...if I had to wait a long time for it to be made for me, I'm keeping it. :D

Like Jeff has done, I have given many knives as gifts. I have given my sons each 2-3 fixed blades and a folder. I keep a collection of less than 15 knives. Money is tight, I'm changing jobs, so knives are not a huge priority. I won't turn away a great opportunity, but have been selling more than buying. And don't have any customs on order (yet).

Machete
Fiskars hatchet
M95 Sissipukko
4 inch traditional pukko
SAK Farmer
Swiss Tool
CS Buck 110 in S30V

Actually I dont own any of these (except for the machete),but if I do,they would be all the knifes I can possibly need.

I'd get by just fine with my axe and a 3.5-4" knife, current preference is the koster bushcraft. I like having a SAK or multitool too though.

I've got to trim some of the fat, no matter how juicy and yummy it is, I want some top notch nordic blades, like one of those tommi puuko's to compare to my koster bushcraft.

Pains me to do it, but i've gotta cut these babies loose. I mean, who needs more than one 7" knife, honestly? I'm keeping my busse basic 7, but I seriously wonder if it'll ever make it out on a trip to the bush except to play with while car camping.

For the great outdoors: I'd concur with axe, 4-5" drop point, and SAK/Multitool.

But if it is a question of need, really need, I might be able to get by with just a good axe.

Inside: a 10" chef's knife can do just about every thing.

Man I am at work, and now I have freaking coffee stains on my shirt and pants. Dry cleaning bill incoming!

Dry cleaning bill, my butt!!

I have a partially chewed peanut lodged in my sinus cavity tickling the back of my right eyeball!!

Do you have any more unmarried daughters?

If I had to pick just 3, it would be my Wetterling's Axe, Bark River Aurora and a Vic Farmer.

That would be all I would need, but it's not as much fun as changing rotations with different combinations.

Funny, first reply pretty much summed it up for me...I have axes from Wetterlings, Iltis and Agdor Bruks and I would be happy with any of them, other than that I would want my Aurora and although I don't have a Farmer, I have a Soldier and love it, so I think a Farmer would be perfect.

So a 24" axe, a 4" general, and 2.5" folder about covers it for me!

But I do like to have multiples. I don't see myself as a collector at all, but backups, safeties, stockpiles and chaches...that I do in spades!

I carry 3 or 4. 5" FB, 11" kukri (comes with a small 2" utility blade and sharpener), and a t-hawk.

My trio would be a farmer, GB mini and one of my barkies, fox river or canadian special.
I would have a few more I can never get rid of though, 12 inch tram, OHT, alox cadet,
grohmann mini skinner, but the collection is shrinking now. I am selling off blades to fund the next purchases, to keep it all pooled.
I just sold my swamp warden and I think I am gonna get a Helle futura.

Need for the outdoors? GB mini.

I do carry my EDC (Ritter Grip) and a fixed (Howling Rat LM) when I hike in addition though. My EDC because...it's already in my pocket and why not? The fixed I carry so I have a more robust tool ON my person. The GB rides shotgun in the daypack. Now I think about it, any one of them would work on there own I'm just really digging the mini right now.

Here is a pic of my GB Small Forest Axe with some alternative competition

After doing a very sharp convex blade on the CS Kukri the use of this or the Axe is undecided.....needs more testing really. But it can do as much chopping as I think I could need and maybe more versatile than the Axe.

The medium fixed blade is undicided from these-

They are all excellent but with different traites....I am also doing a Ratmandu which could be a contender....and a Skinny Ash convexed...all if which are good.

On the folder I would take a SAK Champion which has been with me years and would like to add the lightweight Brend Lock Knife to balance my pockets

But even here this may compete with a Mike Lamprey Lock Knife which takes a sharper longer lasting edge

You can see these things are hard choices....but hopefully some more use will show which works best overall.

Thats some serious steel you got there PeterPHWS

Not to jump in but, that would be an Entrek Destroyer made by Ray Ennis I believe. About 14" overall with an 8.5", .25" thick 440C with micarta handle.

I had one but sold it because I have two other 'choppers'.

Really great albeit heavy bolo-style chopper. It will cut and chop very well, at least as good if not better than a similar weight hand axe-in my experience.

i carry a mixture of these.
auto on the left: ruger p90th, boker bo055 converted, and protechtr-1.4
edc on the right: mini cyclone, leek composite, and crkt m16-10kz
usually 1 auto and 2 edc
but i always have my mini cyclone with me

I'm a poor guy so I cary what ive got
a cold steel Recon 1 that I got as a weedding from a very good friend
a gerber suspention

the gerb and the cold steel i carry on me always anyway so even in a supprise situation i've still got 'em.
I also have a gerber that I got as a gift from my wife that I've never gotten a chance to use... its fixed blade 3-4 in bead blasted like finish and has a guthook I don't remember off hand what it's called.
