How Many Knives Have You Given Away?

I've probably given at least a few dozen away this year. I've tried selling a couple here and there, but was no good at that. Seem to enjoy giving them away more. :) Mostly to extended family, co-workers, and my kids' friends.

About 30, including a CRK umnumzaan and an Al mar sere.
Mostly to friends who couldn't afford nice knives.

Seven this year, two of them, a Rat Tail and a Scrapivore to a fellow forum member. The others to nephews and a brother in law. Nothing says "Merry Christmahanaukwaanzaka" like a good knife.

I've gifted about nine knives to family members if my memory serves right, and another two to a friend over in Utah.

About 6 months into knife collecting... I will be giving away my first gift knife, the ZT 0550, to my brother for Christmas :).

Many...to deployed military, law enforcement, life-long friends, and relatives...
It makes two of us happy each time...

White Elephant tonight, I'm bringing a blade to gift.

Pretty much any occasion I try to pick something sharp and shiny. BIL got a Leatherman Wingman, he loves it and carries it every day.

Dozens. Many knives have passed through me, but I've never once sold a knife though I have traded. I've also been given several knives, new and used, over the years.

I am a sucker for the co-workers that keep asking to use my knife. I have gifted several Leatherman Sidekicks and Wingmans- lots of SAK Classics. The best knife I gifted was the gal that works next to me (10 + years) always used my knife to open the bundles of magazines to sort. She would ask "What knife do you have today?". In a trade I got a NIB purple s30v Blur So the next time she asked I handed it to her in a little gift bag. She was ecstatic! Now her knife collection is bigger than mine!!!

I gave my stepson a very nice custom from our EXCHANGE (thanks gimmejr) for a wedding gift. He loves it. He has it on display on the mantle. :D

One. A friend at work was asking for small items for some kind of charity auction he was doing. I gave him a $10 Kershaw Swerve, the 3Cr13 Walmart version. I wouldn't have given that away if I wasn't planning on upgrading to the 8Cr13 assisted version anyways, and he apparently end up auctioning it off for $40.

Normally though, I don't give away knives. Most people I know personally don't care ANYTHING about them, and I'd rather give them something they are interested in. My dad and sister understand the usefulness of a pocket knife, but they find what they already carry(a Case Mako and an SAK respectively) all they need.

I usually give my brother a new fixed blade when he deploys, so four fixed blades for him. I've given my best friend a folder, my father a couple of bowies, and my grandfather some CaseXX Stockmans since he loves them so much.

I've given away more than I own. I've been a hobbyist maker since I was 13, and am about to turn 50...

Surprised no one has mentioned the tradition of asking for a coin or a dollar in return for the gift of a knife.
I make that part of the process just to inject a bit of fun into it. Different theories as to the background on the tradition.

I've gifted a couple over the years - like 10 maybe. I have a couple gathering dust in the junk drawer that really should be re-homed. My girlfriend is getting a Global kitchen knife from me for Christmas (and yes, we'll exchange a coin, funnily enough when I bought the knife online for her it came from the dealer with a coin and a little card to explain the tradition, which I thought was kinda cool.)

I always insist that the people I gift knives to bring them back for me to sharpen when they require it. I hate the thought of those gifted knives getting blunt and staying like that.

2 in the past couple of months, and I'm GAWing a bm mini grip right now in the knife life thread. I've only been interested in knives for the past year, prior to that I carried the same dull as a rock m tech folder around for god knows how long. I'm definitely thinking about picking up an alox sak for the gift pass around thing my family does every year(mainly because I want a new sak and I hope I get it)

I've lost track of all the knives I've given away over the years. This year I've ordered a few cool 1980s Japanese folders, a Windlass Bowie, and a 1960s Hen & Rooster trapper with stag handles as gifts for family and friends. Each knife was selected with the person's individual needs and personality in mind. And then I found a deal I couldn't refuse on a dozen mid-quality serrated hawkbill lockbacks that I can randomly hand out to anyone who needs a knife over the next year, if I don't feel like giving them a $25 Byrd or a $70 Spyderco. My mechanic is getting 2 knives: a pearl handled Conquistador canoe and a heavy duty serrated workknife.

I've given a few knives over the years. To my daughter, my nephews, and kids of my close friends. The look on a kid's face when he or she gets their first knife is... priceless.
