How many of you guys wear vests?

My wife was cleaning out one of the closets and pointed out the substantial number of vests that hang on one of my racks (photo journalists vests, Carhartt, western leather, dress, etc..). I wear a vest a lot, summer and winter, casual and dress, and definitely in the woods. The more pockets, the better the vest... I think it goes with the knife and pack obsession that I have. I've been eyeballing the Duluth Trading Working Man's vest recently, but before I pull the trigger, what do you guys like, or am I alone on the vest thing?

An oilskin that I like a lot..

I wear them a lot myself. I have three of them in the truck now. I really don't care what others think, I wear what is comfortable to me. My opinion? You can't have enough pockets.
I like that oilskin a lot.

I am a fan of wearing a vest with a suit. I like the look and it gives some additional pockets which can always be necessary when wearing a suit as the items carried need oft need to spread out in suit to avoid unsightly bulges or unnecessary wear on the suit.

I also like the photojournalist vests. I typically use them for day hikes as they have ample enough pocket space to load a survival kit, first aid kit, and more. All in all, I am a big fan of vests. If you get the Duluth vest, please give us a review. It looks like a nice vest.

I have a couple of vests, and the more pockets the better! I rarely wear them, though. I just forget about them until I am out in the bush and thinking about good ways to organize things in my pockets. I guess I am more of the lots-of-pocket pants type people.

I have a vest that I wear when fishing. It has enough pockets to contain a PSK and a good selection of lures and tackle. This way, I can leave my tackle box behind when I wander about the shoreline of a lake.

Outside of fishing, I'm not much of a vest guy, though I can see their merits. I prefer a light, breathable shirt or jacket, with my gear stowed in my pack.

All the best,

- Mike

I usually wear one of these around on the weekend.

I'm another of those who think you can never have too many pockets.

I like that, do you use it for concealed carry?

I will. I might pick up their "worth a damn" shop coat too. I have had a lot of luck with Duluth's stuff..

Vests are great, so is oilskin... but it will smell.

I never minded that. I have been wearing an oilskin duster (heavy type) for years.. Nothing like it in a driving rain....

Not unless I want to end up in jail. :)

Can't have concealed carry in my part of the world, but it would certainly work well for that if you can do it.

What it does have is a couple of large pockets in the rear for water bottles or shotgun cartridges or suchlike.

I wear a western leather one in the cooler months, but when it is hot I dont wear it. I like the added pockets alot, and leather kind of keeps out the wind.

I used to wear a vest fairly frequently for EDC, just because it's so darn easy to conceal a carry piece with one. But they do scream 'gun' to those who are in the know, and everyone I knew gave me constant flak about wearing the vest.

The one's I've used were 'photographer' style but not by any particularly quality make like 5.11 or anything. All those pockets are super nice to haul your stuff. It's the closest thing a dude can have to a purse I think.

I've got a photojournalist vest I like but my favorite is the Tilley I got from A.G.Russell. Nice discount last Christmas season. I saw it was discounted again recently so I picked up another. I've been thinking about the summer-weight Duluth workingman's.

I carry a gear bag a lot and I've found judicious pruning of some unlikely gear allows me to wear a vest instead. The photo vest and cargo pants will carry more than I need. Traveling, like into New York City, is a lot easier hands-free.

I’m a vest wearing fool,

...of course my wife will argue about the “vest wearing” part.

I have a least a half dozen; every thing from nylon, to cotton, leather, insulated canvas, full blown winter Carhart.

I stuff the pockets with what I need, change the vest that’s packed with the seasons.

Big Mike - Well, it appears that I'm in good company, or at least my kind of company...

Spooky - you are right about the vest/gun perception, its sort like wearing a large tactical waist pack!

gainj - I missed the fact that you are in OZ...

ESAV - Yep the Duluth vests are on the short list...

I have been looking at this vest/backpack from BSA for a too... It combines a pack with a break-away vest. If they attached a knife to it, I would have already broken down and bought it...

I wear a vest a lot in the winter instead of a jacket. I find I'm almost as warm and it's a lot less bulky.
