This is what I use for SAR as well as camping.

Its a copy of one of those african patrols vests or something like that, but I can keep everything for:

Shelter
Firstaid
Water/food
Signal/Navgation
spares.:D

It also wear very nice, I had it on a trip a week ago with the Navy. We were on a 5 day trip on the north sakatchewan. One Ranger, me, and two Navy personal to a boat, I kept plenty enough for us to spend the night or what ever might come up, actually my pack was taking on the second day for the Rescue boat, I was pretty impressed.

I have a number of vest that I wear in the outdoors. Occasionally I will wear one at a job site if I need pockets to store things. I often wear a photo jounalist vest hiking and then don't have a day pack for stuff like water, first aid and so forth. I wear vest fishing streams and it contains all of the tackle I'm likely to need for a day astream.

I've considered getting a vest many times, haven't yet, though.

On a more serious note, Mike, I'm really sorry about your wife's lack of a head. Awhile ago, I just thought your photographic skills were somewhat lacking, but I am slowly realizing that she doesn't have one. My condolences. :(

Women have heads???

Cabelas Safari vest is nice with tons of pockets, I also have one from Concealed carry Clothiers that is great for concealment of a small handgun.

I have two vests. One in the car, which is my backup vest in case weather changes or the need for more pockets rises. The other one is a lightweight one which I regularly use on hikes or other outdoor activities. I allways tell myself that I need enough pockets.

Fonly,

That's a serious vest... What is that?

it's a copy of the south african 85 pattern vest (the second of the three variants)
usualy sold as the "south african assault vest" or SAAV. the design is pretty good, although the quality of the repros vary widely, with most of them being nowhere near as good as the origional. I think someone did a modular version as well.
I had one for a while, but had to stop using it because the front clips broke (mine was a lower end repro) and I also found that the back pouch made use with a backpack impossible (even when empty).

before that I used annother variant on it, in the form of a fairly worn out SWATF vest, which is a vest based on the same design, but with far fewer pouches (4 mag pouches, 2 grenade, 2 side utillities and one large rear pouch) which unfortuenately fell apart.
I now use a cheapo fishing/photogropher style vest, aquired (Actualy before the other two, but never used) from disneyland paris.

I wanted a vest for a long time and I finally got a lightweight vest with lots of pockets.

I find that even though it is lightweight, it is still hot to wear. And after I put in all my day hike gear, it flops around more than I like.

However, I sometimes do lots of air travel and I think it will be perfect for summer travel. I can stuff it with my passport, boarding pass, ear plugs, eye shades, pen, my deflated air neck pillow, etc. All of that stuff is pretty light and I will be able to access it even if I am seat belted into a small airline seat. It will make my carry-on luggage smaller.

I used to like wearing suit vests instead of sport jackets at work in the 90's. I am hoping that look comes back in style.

I wear photog-style vests sometimes in the outdoors or while traveling - even though the look screams "touron."

Thanks. Do you have any experience with Arktis SAR vests?

I find that shorter vests, like the oilskin in the pic, doesn't flap around as much... I have a Banana Republic Photo vest that I don't wear much though.. It is long, heavy and hot. The lower pockets would slap a lot if you put any gear in them...

I have a photo vest that I wore for awhile , I started packing to much in it though so it hangs on the rack now.

I do love my King of the Mountain wool vest and wear it lots when it's cooler out. Not big on pockets but very warm. Also have a few bird hunting vest, well one now the other didn't make it through the last grouse season. They are the ticket for carrying GPS, lunch, water, dog treats, a small kit, and of course shells and birds.

I've been eying up a Filson vest for a long time but keep buying knives.:o

Women have heads???

Next time you are looking at a women mneedham, tilt you head upwards a bit. Kind of like looking upward into the sky. You will see hair, eyes, nose and a mouth :D :D

I used to wear a fishing vest all the time in the outdoors in my highschool days. I don't know why I abandoned it. I've been kind of interested in getting a good quality one like a Filson lately. My problem is I invariably get weak and buy a knife instead. Well, I'm going to keep trying to buy more gear. This summer and my resolve to not buy more knives to the end of the year isn't going too well.

Thanks. Do you have any experience with Arktis SAR vests?

I'm afraid not, most of my "exprience" is from reading round the subject, along with the limited experience with those two designs (the SAAV and SWATF vest). Arktis is somewhat out of my price range.

I wear a fleece or wool vest alot in the fall, and cooler spring summer nights/days.... Dont have any of the 5.11 types, or photo types. I have a few from Columbia, Patagonia etc...

Dogs and vests go together like BRKT and Big Mike.

One of my best friends is the most serious hiker/camper I have ever known. He and his wife have two labradoodles that hike with them, they have had both dogs fitted with harnesses that can carry 4 cans of Guiness each.. I got get a pic of that..
