In about 2 weeks from now im going for carp fishing. My mom sends dad and me out to fish for carp. She makes Gefilte fish and there is only one lake that has carp that taste good. Most of the time i catch alot of carp but i want to catch even more lol. We go for the Golden Carp and if im lucky i would get enough of the crappie for a nice dinner. What most of you use for bait??? Been looking on the net but boy there are so many diffrent baits out there.

Carp are fun to catch. I don't eat them, but a lot of folks do... so they must not be too bad. In college we would catch a cooler full of them and drive to the beer store where we would trade the carp for beer (I know... it sounds a bit like a Jeff Foxworthy monologue... but hey, what can I say...) We always called them 'bonefish'.

The bait I use, with a small treble hook (their mouth is kinda small) is to mash corn flakes in a small container with BIG RED soda. Mush it up into what you think is the proper consistency, and place it on to the hook and let it sink to the bottom. The carp will suck it up!

Normally, I would charge you a six-pack for this information... but times are a bit better now for me now. ;)

Good luck... post some pics of your catch.:)

Kdstrick well what can i say you an angel to share that info ...... We make our bait one cup flour one cup suger and one cup corn meal. We boil a cup and a 1\4 of water when its boiling we add the suger and stir untill it melts. Turn the stove off and add the flour and stir it in. Then we add the corn meal untill it gets sort of goey to the touch. Let it sit till its cool and put it in a bag.. it sticks well on the hook on the rig we use. The meat it self is very good tasting white meat.

I've only fished for carp purposely once. We were at a family reunion, I was bored and there were fish in the creek.

I didn't have any bait so I just used rolls from the reunion dinner. They worked GREAT!!! We caught one almost every time. Just get a dinner roll, or whatever kinda bread you have, tear off a piece and roll it into a ball about the size of a dime. Smash it and roll it good enough so it stays together and stays on your hook. White bread will probably hold together better than anything else.

Good luck!

Tonym i seen one kid get atlist 10 fish at over 10lb each in less then 2 hours with a bow and arrow. I need to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow.

Yeah, I only did it once. A friend of mine took it with him on my boat and we bagged 8. 1 weighed in at 18lbs. It was alot of fun:thumbup:

Sasha There ius quite a Carp fishing culture out there with specialized gear and baiting techniques, just goggle carp fishing and have a look, there are several forums as well.

Carp are bottom feeders, They will eat the same things as catfish. I don`t try to catch them, but will hook one once and awhile, while catfishing.

We call them "freshwater bonefish" here. There are a lot of fly fisherman who love fishing for them. We used to bowfish them during spawn season.

Johnny What i did find was that carp likes more sweet bait while cat fish would eat the most nasty food there is on the bottom. I know a few guys that would say they would never eat carp cause its a bottom feeder but would eat the cat fish. I have changed each one of there mind as soon as they tried some of the dishes lol.. Not all carp does taste same. We have a lake about 3 hour drive from home with very clean water and the carp has sweet flavor to it. Now you also want to find where you can catch the Golden Carp they dont grow as big but they are the best tasting i ever tried.

I like to get a couple now and then to smoke in the smoker. I take one can of whole kernel sweetcorn and one pack of cherry instant jello. Mix the two the night before and the next day use it on a long shank hook. I also bowfish them with the recurve.

In this lake they dont bite well on whole sweet corn. I tried it and nothing. Heck guys you should come with me fishing and for lunch we could cooke a huge pot or the fish and potatoes lots of black peper and some bay leaves. throw in there some catfish as well.. what else can you ask for...

Once I came across a guy holding a HUGE carp, and when I asked him what he used to catch it, he said cornmeal. Thanks for posting that bait recipe. Carp fishing looks like a lot of fun if they turn up as big as I've seen them!

I'll bet they taste good deep fried whole with a sweet and sour or sweet soy sauce/julienne carrot, ginger, and shallot topping poured over it :) I do beleive it can be used as an ingredient in asian style fish "meat" balls :)

Man that does sound good. They do use great meat balls i done it before in some sauce.. I also make some spicy fish cakes from carp. My mom makes those awsome gefilte fish for the holidays. Eat them cold with some horse radish on top, Bread on the side makes great lunch.

Hi Nick the top pic of the carp in your first post is of the Golden carp. You can see the larger scales and its more shiny the bottom one is of the common carp. The best Golden carp is the one that you would catch that would seem to miss some of the scales. Oh yea the Golden carp likes realy clean water.. How do you prepar the fish??? What do you use for bait on a fly rod??? Some carp can put out one hell of a fight.. You got some good fishing there.

G'day sasha

Bread, dough (mixed with a little cotton wool to help keep it on the hook), corn kernels, worms and chicken thigh fillet will all take carp.

With regards to fly's, I like orange, red or pink streamer type flies. Our inland dams tend to have coloured (slightly muddy) water so the more visible the better. In my experience, if the Carp can see the fly they will have a go at it.

A friend of mine soaks them overnight in the fridge with a mix of salty water and vinegar, then rinses them and soaks them in some lemon juice for a couple of hours (again in the fridge), and deep fries them with herbs and spices (they taste great). I'll see him on Monday and ask him what herbs/spices he uses.

It's interesting you describe the large scaled Carp as Golden carp, we call them Mirror Carp.

They're great fun. Landing them with a light fly rod is a bit like trying to land a tractor :D.

Kind regards
Mick
