I don’t know all the state knife laws but I wanted to know how many of you without carry an illegal knife. I mean just carrying a knife that is against the law. such as a gravity, automatic or to big. Thigs like this. I know I and many friends do, here Spyderco's are illegal. But that doesn’t stop me from carrying it.
and if so what would be your excuse if you were ever searched and they found one on you.

an example would be you are driving and get pulled over. They pat ya down as ya have an illegal knife. What do ya do?

Not me, I would rather die than go to jail. I will soon be packing a legal Spyderco Civilian and Surefire flashlight.

Good question though, although if people are carrying illegally I'm not sure they would want to confess here.

well, I am asking for my own self. becosue I love spyderco knives. Just where I live you cant carry knives of any size that can be opened without touching the blade or using inertia to open the blade. They classify these the same as Gravity knives.

I respectfully refuse to answer on the grounds that I might tend to incriminate myself. Your Honor. :(

There are laws and there are laws. Laws against overtly anti-social behavior arise naturally from a society's epectation that civic peace is better than civil war. There are laws that stem from an equally natural human tendency to want to dominate, to impose personal standards on a community.

Knife laws support no natural need. They are a reflection of a cultural trend, not an actual problem. Nevertheless, they are laws, and asking about or suggesting their violation is not a great idea.

A long, long, time ago (longer than the statute of limitations for such offenses--and I was a juvenile); in a jurisdiction far, far away (and unmentioned herein) I was known to carry just about any and all illegal weapons that I could get my hands on or make. One time a group of us JD's (juvenile delinquents) were stopped and searched (the law was looser then). We weren't really involved in any serious illegal activities so the cops simply confiscated everything illegal and went and found more pressing business to attend to. One time at the US border we were strip searched, I had a switchblade confiscated and I was fined on the spot. Things would have been quite different had we say, been carrying drugs, or been sitting in a hot car at the time of these events.

Times have changed, but that is my experience. I am a respectable old codger now and I seldom worry about the details of the laws. I don't carry things that would make a cop think twice. I could get a concealed carry permit if I felt a need, but I don't.

never claim you carry for self-defence. i live in philly but spend a lot of time in new jersey. i always carry my knife i also have a small fishing pole in my truck with my fishing license. and i keep small pocket tools. if i'm stopped for any reason i'll use fishing or work as an excuse. IN JERSEY I BELIEVE A RUBBER-BAND AND PAPERCLIP ARE ILLEGAL :D

I understand yall not saying anything. I mean i would never say self defence. But jail for like 8 years is better than dead.

I really dont understand these laws. I can kill somebody with a SAk if that was the real reason for the laws. Not saying I would ever even dream of such a thing. Its really hard to look at my Para-Millie and calypso jr and soon 710. and pick up that SAK. That I have had since I was a Boy scout.

Thinking back to my high school days, maybe a rubberband and paperclips SHOULD be illegal.

NJ actually does not limit the length of a knife. It is a good idea to have a reason for carrying one, but living in the country, the suburbs, walking down a trail through the woods, is a reason. :)

Pulling it out and waving it around when you get into an argument with someone is not a good reason.

guys, Is it illegal to cary a knife in ur car, not on ur person but in the gluv compartment for example?

Seriously, what kind of question is this? There is no way in hell I would ever answer such a question, I may carry illegal tools and I may not, it's nobodies concern but mine. Sorry, I guess I'm a little suspicious...

Don't take this as being defensive, I know it sounds that way, but it's not.

As for my excuse if I ever had to give one, I have none nor do I need one.

i understand,

What I mean to get at from this post is.

Do we really take these laws seriosly?

Do we care? will we ever get cought?

Maybe some think, well its concealed and ive never been stoped so I have 0% chance of ever having a illegal knife held against me.

Not in most places. In most places in the US, it is legal to carry a knife on your person. There are some weird places, not many, but some are very weird. If you are a student (e.g., high-school) you should probably consider whether there are special regulations for you. Some cities have blade-length limits.

But for the most part, No, it is not illegal per se to have a knife in your possession. HOWEVER, it would be extremely wise to check up on the laws for whereever you live -- state, city, even country if not the USA.

In general, it is relatively easy to be 100% legal. I advise that whenever you can be legal, you should. There are times and places where no matter what you do, there's a law against it. Try to avoid those places. If you cannot avoid those places, then at least don't go out of your way to be any worse than necessary. Fit in. You save yourself more trouble by blending in than by making a spectacle of yourself. If you're in a locale that has a law against breathing, what can you do? Just don't antagonize the local law enforcement. (Good advice anyway.)

But whatever you do, check your local laws. There is a "Knife Laws" forum here. Ask there if you are in doubt or don't know where to find out your laws. There are a LOT of misconceptions. Get the real story.

Best wishes,
Paul

Knives are not my first choice as a SD-tool. If you can carry a OC spray, or even get a CCW licence you will not have to break any laws and have the possibility to defend your life.

Second thought, is it REALLY worth the trouble, jailtime and legal problems just to wear that specific knife! Are there no other options that stay within the boundary of the law, and will give you the same peace of mind?

Is the speed difference of an automatic knife and an assisted opener really a VALID factor in surviving a knifefight?

Whatever the law forbids you to carry there are always knives that will come very close AND stay in the boundry of the law.

Carry these knives legaly, if you can't carry any weapon, make your body a weapon!

It's not the tool but the operator of the tool.

I personally don't wear illegal knives, i don't feel that whatever advantage they might have doesn't has enough benefit for me to break the law.

Actually, since the Constitution forbids any law that infringes on the right to bear arms, it is the knife laws themselves that are illegal - not the carrying of knives.

Well, once upon a time there was a high-school student. Who may or may not have carried edged weapons in a "Safe Zone (ROFLMAO)," and those weapons may or may not have been legal for him or her to carry.

Several years later, that same student, who now may or may not be at college, may or may not continue to carry edged weapons. However, that same student who may or may not be at college and may or may not be carrying a knife upon his or her person, may or may not be able to quote all applicable laws regarding knives in the state, county, and city in which he or she may or may not reside... and obeys them.
