How many people carry there knives illegally

The laws we live under are literally impossible to obey completely. So you must weigh the probability of getting caught against the punishment given.

From what I understand, at least in my area, knife laws are kinda there for an extra point. Let's say you're a normal, average guy wandering around with your knife. Nobody really cares. If you're a drunk, wandering in the streets after dark, then they can use the "illegal knife" to hold you or something.
I wonder if that's the point the original poster was going for?

I'm betting that if you go by the absolute letter of the law, a LOT of people in here are in violation more often than they realize. The trend does seem to be towards making anything potentially dangerous a crime, but letting it slide unless LE or the DA feels the need to enforce.

It's like speed limits: the "unofficial" limit is almost always 5 to 10 mph over the posted limit, but no one ever gets pulled over for it unless the local court is running a little short this month, or the cop's having a bad day or needs to make some quota, or just wants an excuse to pull you over to perform a search that would otherwise be illegal...

It gives the government a nice big club they can use selectively to harm or benefit who they choose; problem is, we're all supposed to be equal in the eyes of the law. Not that it ever really works that way, of course...

Let's see.

Lives in NYC.

Has a Paramilitary and is thinking about a BM710.

Goes to school and has an IT job.

Asks people to admit online that they're breaking the law.

Vinny, is that you?

I cannot believe that anyone is stupid enough to admit on a public voard that they carry illegaly.

Well I guess i should be fine carrying a under 4" folder here in NYC.

I do IT as my job while in school. Could that be reason for the knife. Even thogh i dont use it on the job alot, well i do sometimes.

Yes, you should be fine.

For IT: cutting packing tape; cutting nylon strapping on shipping cartons; cutting cat 5 cables; cutting cable ties (zip ties); opening "blister packs" for all sorts of stuff: label tape, printer cartridges, etc.; slicing your bagel for lunch; when you go to the Greek place down the street for lunch you can use your knife to cut the spinach pie instead of using the plastic KSO (Knife-Shaped Object) that they supply to crush it. Surely you can supply others.

I' can't be totally certain but scinse I'm in norway I'll assume anything above 2 - 3" to be illegal. So I'm probably carrying illegally. I'm carrying a 6" folder.

The way that I figure it, none of this is sworn depositions, we're only BS'ing here. Someone would have to track you down and find reasonable cause to search you for any actual legal consequences to insue.

why is that. it seemed to be a good question as many have taken part in answering it.

read the 1st post. I told poeple not to go out of there way.

well it doesnt really matter

I can say

I have killed 13 people in florida.

does that mean I did it, No. Some people who get arrested just admit to murders that they didnt even commit for other reasons. It is the laws true responsibility to find out if its true.

I know the 7" Bowie I carry under the truck/car seat is illegal and I would likely get dinged for it if I showed an attitude or something. I look pretty respectable (for a Texas curmudgeon) and am unlikely to attract a search like I did in my younger days. Since I live in the sticks and can usually expound that I am on my way to an outdoor activivity of one sort or another (my truck usually has a variety of equipment in it) I am not afraid to have it along.
Now of course if they question my 110 on my hip and ask if I am carrying any other knives on my person..... :D Some days the QUANTITY of blades may raise some eyebrows.

the knife laws in WI are pretty vague really. If hard pressed, they could probably consider a whole lot of knives that people carry all the time illegal. The actual law is worded pretty goofy. But then again, I live in a hick town, and short of getting arrested for something else, or stabbing someone, I doubt you would get hassled about most knives.

That being said, I do carry a bali sometimes.

When it comes to my self preservation or that of my Immediate family & friends,I don't give a Rat's Butt what the state laws are.I usually carry a 5 to 6inch fixed blade whenever I leave the house. If I'm expecting trouble-The blade length moves up to 8 inches or better. As long as I carry it concealed and since I tend to NOT do stupid things anymore(with Age comes Wisdom!) I go by the "It Ain't Illegal unless you get caught" mind set.But this world's gettin' Tooo Freakin' Crazy to walk around Unarmed-This is Just My opinion, but I'm Stickin to it.

On all holidays I dress in full body armor and carry an Uzi and a poleaxe.

Carrying any knife here in Finland is illegal. And the concept of self-defence, when using any kind of "weapon", is pretty much non-existant. Automatics, spikes, bayonets and double-edged knives like daggers are considered "dangerous edged weapons", and getting caught with one gets you in court. Any regular knife gets you fined. (IIRC all this)

I still carry a folder, nothing fancy in case it gets confiscated. There isn't a big chance here to get in a situation where one would have to use a knife against another person. I consider my edc a tool. An acquaintance once told me that he didn't understand why anyone would carry a weapon. I think I was sharpening a pencil or something. I told him I didn't understand why he thought a tool is a weapon. A great many people still carry a leatherman, even though that is illegal as well.

You ladies out there, don't leave home without your mace.

In my state the CCW permit has some language about concealed knives, but then does not speak to legality for their carry.

If you have a Concealed Carry Permit for your pistol....Does it also apply to a knife?

Wild guess. It probably varies state to state to commonwealth.Any legal minds out there know anything about this?

In some states, yes.

Arizona
Delaware
Florida
Idaho
Kentucky
Montanna*

*Montanna's laws are kinda iffy. One section defines deadly weapons prohibited for carry (but doesn't list switchblades), one excempts permit holders from these restrictions, but another says switchblades are illegal. So anything but switchblades is my guess.

In South Carolina, South Dakota, and Arkansas, you don't need a permit to conceal switchblades, balisongs, and other "dangerous" knives. In Vermont, you don't need a permit to conceal anything, handguns included.

There are other states that allow carry of such knives openly, but having a CC permit doesn't apply to the knives.

AFAICT, these states listed in this post allow concealment of any weapon, not just knives. What constitues a "weapon" varies from state to state, but in these states, a CCW permit overrides all that. You could walk around with a sword in your trenchcoat if you wanted.

Disclamer: These are my interpretations of the laws as are presented to me (via www.packing.org and other sites). As with any interpretation, they might be flawed or erroneous.

I don’t know all the state knife laws but I wanted to know how many of you without carry an illegal knife. I mean just carrying a knife that is against the law. such as a gravity, automatic or to big. Thigs like this. I know I and many friends do, here Spyderco's are illegal. But that doesn’t stop me from carrying it.
and if so what would be your excuse if you were ever searched and they found one on you.

an example would be you are driving and get pulled over. They pat ya down as ya have an illegal knife. What do ya do?
