How many rounds?

This may have been discussed before.

I just recently acquired a Glock and have a rifle on order.

I was wondering how much y'all keep in stock in reference to ammo?

You'll notice that I was not specific as to what size rounds I will be using...I thought it might be useful if you could name the round and how much you keep in stock.

Thanks in advance!

I mainly stockpile .45acp, .357 mag, and .308. Oh, and .22lr of course.

In .45 I think I have about 5000 rounds on hand at any given time.

.357mag, I don't know the number but it fills a .50 ammo can.

.308 my brass alone weighs about 200 pounds now.

.22lr I buy by the 5000 case, and I have a few cases.

But I know I'm taking things to a bit of an extreme.

I keep about 1000 .223 and 1000 .40 cal which will probably be lo compared to the others on the forum.

I better start saving up!

I won't reveal specifics but I have thousands of rounds for the calibers I shoot and reloading equipment and makings for many more.

whoa - that's a lot of $$ on ammo!

I like to possess 500 rounds of ammo per gun caliber I own "just in case the aliens land". Except for 12ga rounds b/c they are too darn expensive!

2k of .22LR
1.5-2k of .357 Magnum
500 .40S&W
... and growing. :-)
I feel ammo is a good investment since it seems to only go up in price.

You're not kidding...that's at Canadian prices too so often double what you'd pay!

One day, I hope to be able to say to people who ask this question, "I have a truckload."

And when they say, "what truck?" I say, "Tandem Mack."

I make most of my own ammo now but I always have my ear to the ground for any deals that come up.

I guess I consider my minimums:

  • Rifles - 200 rounds
  • Handguns - 50 rounds
  • Shotguns - 100 rounds
  • Rimfire - 500 rounds

But these are all minimums. If you have the storage space and money, more is always better. ;)

I've got 223, 22lr, 22mag, 308, 45, 9mm, 40 S&W, and 357sig stocked up... In them I have about

3,000 rounds of 223
5,000 rounds of 22lr
about 500 rounds of 22mag
close to 4,000 rounds of 308
1,000 rounds of 45
2,450 rounds exactly of 9mm
50 rounds of 40S&W (LOL that's what I shoot the most)
around 1,500 rounds of 357sig.

I also have a 500 round pack of 223 and a 500 round pack of 357sig in my SHTF Bag with some mags ready to go by the door.

Why would I need any ammo.....................................................................

O Bomb A will take care of all of us:jerkit:

It depends on several things. First of all, how "serious" are these firearms to you? More to the point, how serious are YOU ?

If you're not really serious and bought these guns "just in case," then a box of 50 handgun and 20 rifle will be more than enough.

Are these your only guns ?

What caliber? If the rifle is a .22 rimfire, then 500 would be bare minimum. If a .375 H&H Magnum, then 20 rounds will suffice.

What will they be used for........really ?

So, we need more info.

Presuming you are at least "semi-serious," we'll continue:

If the long gun is a "fighting rifle" in .223 or .308 or 7.62x39, then 1000 rds is minium. If the rifle takes detachable full capacity magazines, 12 are minimum. A sling and mag pouch are also desirable.

The Glock needs 500 rds minimum, plus 100 rds of JHP ammo. You should have 12 full capacity magazines, also. Add to that a good carry system, to include holster, mag pouches and belt. Concealment option would be nice.

Spare parts for both guns is a good idea.

Learning how to shoot is essential.

Understand, these ammo minimum do NOT mean you shoot them until they're nearly gone, then you go buy some more. The minimum amounts should never be touched, barring a serious event. (such as not being able to find ammo on the shelf for extended periods)

If you cannot buy them in bulk, then buy a box or two every other trip to the store.

.

Another word of advice- if you are relying on availability of military surplus ammunition-- If it is available now, stock up now. Buy more than you think you'll need, because eventually it won't be available and you'll be stuck paying more, much more (especially for some oddball calibers).

Buy ammo every chance you get. It is NOT getting cheaper. STOCK UP NOW. With all the talk of taxing the crap out of ammo, better be sure than SORRY!

I don't really feel the need to have a stockpile of ammo for survival purposes, but if I usually shoot around 1000 plus rounds out of my favorite guns every year so if I find a good price I get it and then that't the gun I shoot the most:thumbup:

A while back I got some 9x18 for 90 bucks a thousand and I had 2000 for them. I think now I'm down to about 500 left.

When the Wolf .30M1 is on sale I try to buy a case of it.

Just depends on what I can find.

same here.... roll out lits set up for the "real" guns, ammo on hand for thr "toys" reloading componets as well....

"buy it cheap stack it deep"

I don't discuss specifics either (climate isn't friendly of late). Suffice to say, I have a LOT with the ability to make more.

I would say that a good target for someone that has to start investing a ton of money in ammo is to shoot (pun intended) for 1000 rounds for each caliber / gauge of weapon you own. After you hit that benchmark - save up money to buy reloading equipment. After you get the reloading equipment - keep buying more ammo..............you can never have enough ammo.

Thanks guys for all of the advice.

As you can tell I am just getting into shooting and would like to become 'serious' as some of you have put it.

"More" has been driven straight to the point and I appreciate it.
