How many rounds?

The practical advice is: Do what you can afford. I work in a place that sells guns and ammo, and it is getting scarce. I won't put another mortgage on my house to stock up, but I will forgo other "luxuries" so that I can put that cash into ammo.

man you can never have to much ammo. because if you get into a shtf senerio you can always trade ammo for supplies. i have 2500 rounds of 40 and 5000 rounds of 223 and right around 1500 rounds of shot shells that should sustain you for a good long while. and i if you have a boltgun and you reload i would also recomend that you stock up on brass, bullets, primers and powder then you can make as many as you want

That's good advice...I have a lot of money tied up in ammo but it's all from when I was making a lot of money.

For the next little bit I will be making less, and I'm accumulating less. I love ammo, and guns, and putting my ammo in my guns, and sending part of it out one way and part of it out another. And I love feeling prepared and ready.

But more than that I love not worrying about my next meal, or my electricity bill, or going to the dentist. Survivalism is cool...surviving comfortable with a happy family is cooler.

I see what you mean as far as feeling prepared is concerned. I guess that is why we are all here. We are the proverbial ant to the unprepared crickets. I do get a sense of security having the ammo that I have. I also like the idea that ammo can be used as currency and/or barter piece.

This is a recommend not a "What I got" Post

For starting out

22lr , 2 bricks of 500, but then also a box of 100 CCI type better. if you go out plinking or target shooting use a brick, you still have one at home in case.

Pistol ammo, a couple boxes of 50, 2 or 3 clip is a start of an auto loader

Rifle ammo, . 243, 30-06, 30-30, 7mm, hunting type rifle I would say 2 - 20 round boxes for each gun. 1 to take , 1 ready at home

Assault rifle ammo, .223, .308, SKS , AR... a few hundred 4 or 5 clips to start.

Shotgun a box of 25 of different sizes, a box of buckshot, a box of #4, a box of 7 or 8 and if your shot gun will take slugs 5 or 10 could be handy.

This is a start, I wouldn't max out visa to store it on the shelf.

If you plan on target practise on a certain weapon, stock it up and shoot it up
but I would try to keep a box home, in case when I get there.

If you get home invaded like in some cornball action movie, how many times do you think you will have to reload?

And I guess another good question is how much do you miss? Deer hunting I seldom use more than 2 shots, But go dove hunting and discover the art of missing, they are quick and turn on a dime.

you can always buy more.. and for the folks that have 5000 round of this or that, great.

always make the first one count, Pat

I couldn't count them all but.

4 30 caliber ammo cans full of loose .223
2 30 caliber ammo cans full of loose .45 acp
1 30 caliber ammo can full of .40 S&W
1 50 and 1 30 caliber ammo can full of loose .308
2 30 caliber ammo cans ful of boxed 7.62x39
6000 .22lr
500 .44 mag
a couple hundred 12 gauge
300 .357 mag and I don't even have one anymore.

Luckily I was able to but all my .223 when they were $3.33 a box at wal-mart.

Im not sure if its a good idea to post this kind of thing on a public forum thats available not only to the bad guys but also to any gub'mint ATF types that might want to look into your arsenal at some time in the future. That said, I have enough to last:D--KV

All I have at the moment are a pair of .22's. I think I have a mere 150 rounds on hand. I ought to have 1,000 and there is no excuse not to, given the cheapness of .22 - even the good brands.

Decided not to say , paranoia getting the best of me. I think I have enough to last a week or two if the supply runs out. Chris

After the freak boating accident, all my guns and ammo fell into a deep lake.

I keep 2 years worth.

The amount I shoot in 2 years is about

1,000 .22 LR

500 12 Gauge various from buckshot to birdshot (I hunt waterfowl)

200 .45 ACP

100 .270 Win

50 .35 Rem

50 .380

Almost forgot, 1,000 rounds of airgun pellets also.

I used to keep more, but it just started to seem ridiculous. Even if the SHTF, you can only shoot 1 at a time. Besides, with a stroke of the pen, possessing more than X amount could become a felony, then you would be out a lot of $.

Lotta paranoia here.......

I'm not aware of any current laws in the USA that restrict the amount of ammo one can possess, presuming they're not already a convicted felon. If there IS such a law, please enlighten the rest of us.

Besides, the OP asked what is minimum HE should strive for, not "what do YOU all have?" So the answer(s) should reflect what the OP should get as "enough" ammo.

The various amounts people listed are interesting. I'm a shooter as opposed to merely a gunowner, which means I shoot the guns I have.....some are shot quite a bit. What some people shoot in two years, I shoot in less than a month. Others, of course, shoot more than I do, so there is no "wrong" amount.

Still, one may wonder if the folks that have 10,000 rds of this or that ammo ever shoot any of it....

Still, the guy that has 10,000 rds that never shoots is ahead of the guy that only buys a box of 50 each time he goes to the range to shoot all of those 50 rds.

.

David E,

Please re-read the original post. The OP did ask what WE all kept!

As far as paranoia goes, I am assuming you meant my reference to ammo being limited by law. As I wrote, One stroke of the pen changes everything. You are correct, i know of no laws that prevent one from hoarding ammo, but with the current political climate, i can't imagine it is too far off. Current legislation is pending on both limiting AND serialization of ammo. The idea with serialization is that current ammo will be grandfathered for 3 years. you have to use it up or turn it in after that. That is PENDING, not law yet.

I can't speak for anyone else but there is a reason I own 10,000 rounds of this or that...and it's because I shoot enough that I can't be having to run out and empty five stores for their .308 for a couple of consecutive weekends.

Besides which I make 90% of my ammo, so I shoot it regularly to make sure it's all doing what I want it to.
