It fell off the counter three feet onto a tiled floor.

I don't know if the dark spots at the spine are significant.

I once broke a checkering file by dropping it on concrete, but I think this is surprising behavior in a bread knife.

Wüsthof knives aren't particularly hard. The steel (X50CrMoV15) is along the lines of something like 420HC in terms of carbon and chromium content, and hardness is advertised by Wüsthof at ~ 58 HRC. It shouldn't be that brittle. I'd think something went wrong with manufacture or heat treat, to break it that easily.

Might be worth contacting them, to see what they might say about it.

The dark area might have been a flaw in the steel, waiting to part.
Maybe they will honor a flaw in manufacture and give you a new one!!
Take detailed pictures of it before you send it to them.

It was a gift, maybe 15 years ago. The giver might remember where he bought it, and the store might be in business still (so I'll ask him, duh).
After 15 years of use, I'm not sure it owes me anything, so I think I'll ask Wusthoff for an explanation rather than a refund. Maybe it's never happened before and they'll want to analyze it. Maybe they'll be so mortified that they'll want to send me a full set!

Fortunately I had four backups: a Dexter with an offset handle that works fine; a Chinese Oneida with strange ergos and badly designed edge, which I now know doesn't count; and an antique I haven't had to dust off. And a nice Tramontina that's in a toolbox for cutting fiberglass insulation because it was so cheap.

I don't know. It's worth finding out. As long as it's not warranted for the product's life, or warranted to the original purchaser only.

Hah! So the knife is dead then? It looks like it could find a new role once sharpened down, as a much shorter knife. If they don’t send you a new one, that is. I’ve returned cookware(mailed to the mfr’s dc) just to see if they would honor the lifetime warranty, but it was within the US.

Yikes. Never had that happen..have seen it before. I agree, manufacturing/heat treat issue.

Look into warranty, for sure.

Bread knife?..Victorinox/Wenger..They make a great 8" chef knife as well..cheap workhorse ...Ive been buying MAC for the last few years..

They’ll imply that you had it on the top shelf of a dishwasher too many times, even if you don’t own a dishwasher—if they don’t have a good cs dept or a lifetime warranty. Otherwise, it will hardly cost them anything to gain some goodwill and just send you a new one—if you have the time, I would call the mfr customer service in the US. The worst can happen is you lose 5 minutes. If they help you out it would be cool to know as I have a few of their kitchen knives. The store and receipt should be irrelevant after 15 years.
