how much is benchmade gonna raise their pricing?

Thanks for the update BMC and others. I will be interested to see how things work out number-wise.

If the increase in prices mean increase in quality I will buy a Proxy next year. I know I asked about my contego blade before, but I have I got a blade swap a something like 8 months back and the coating is very spotty near the working bevel, like they ran a belt over the blade before the coating dried. I also sent in my 940-1 for a blade swap and the grind was uneven on the new blade. Staff were EVERY EVERY nice though and the service was free. They at least still have that going.

I’m glad to hear it! It seems true that lately I have been hearing less about BM qc issues. Maybe the sun has finally set on that chapter of BM’s history.

As I hear more and more people say their BM came without defect I will believe it more.

I only have 4 BM's, my (old beat-up second hand) 580 has perfect centering and no blade play (but with the AO spring that's cheating), my new (August) 940-2 has a slightly off centered blade and slight blade play. My three week old Bugout has a slightly off centered blade but absolutely no blade play. My Mini Grip has perfect centering but slight blade play (that knife was my first BM bought back in June).

I just bought from W&W out west, an all black PM2 as well as an all black Para3 and both have perfect centering but both have slight blade play. So even though I can tighten the pivots on all my knives to remove blade play, action suffers and I much prefer the action rather than blade play, as well as the fact that blade play is not an issue just affecting BM as others seem to suffer from it too. I could avail myself of the warranty but because I live up here, I have come to accept some slight issues and use the things until they fall apart.

Still saving up for a 484 though...
Edit March 7 2018, got my Nakamura and it is absolutely flawless.

It’s no coincidence that your oldest BM is the one that runs perfectly. Fortunately a little blade play tends to not make the axis lock unsafe.

I am surprised about the PM2 and 3. I have no Spydies with blade play. (Actually I lied my ZDP delica has slight bp)

I'm not surprised, I just do not believe you about this. Spyderco PMs from Golden are without a flaw (aside from the wimpy screws), and every product from Taichung is pretty much industry leading when it comes to fit and finish. Other than that yes, the drop in QC for BM is fairly recent and not even 4 years ago they were bang on product after product and worth every single cent. In fact I would say they were a bargain for what you got.

I've purchased around 10 benchmades and every single one was perfect out of the box, the QC complaints are kind of a shock to me

Go to a casino or buy a lottery ticket my friend, you are on a roll!

10 recent purchases?

10 purchases over the last 4 years
Your one of few. Or our interpretation of poor qc is not the same as yours.

Not sure that's true. I've heard it's always been the same. Just back then they were more affordable and people looked passed it for the good prices. Fairly debatable but no concrete data one way or another.

One thing is for certain, it's something that's going to stick and no other manufacturer has that stigma. I can't say I haven't seen a good benchmade, cause my friend buys many, and he certainly has some good ones. But I have not owned, of the many Ive had, that didn't have at least two issues or more.

5 of the 10 were balisongs and OTFs, all perfect. A mini and full size grip, minimal blade play, centered blade, good grind lines. Had a BM530, loved that knife, except the stupid thumb studs. A benchmade bedlam and contego, both same deal as the mini and full size.

Since 2014 I've purchased 2 Cabela's Mini Grips---2 HK Axis locks(large size)----2 520's and a 5700

All have been fine----this lack of QC has been greatly exaggerated

From a customer standpoint, hard to know actual percentages of poor QC. Public only sees posts of good/bad info unless the company provide statistics of sold and defects reported. That said, I have only seen my Nov 2017 purchased BM for 4 days and it's been over 7 weeks since purchased. I've been told a new blade replacemennt should take 5 weeks and waiting patiently. I had to send it back to retailer, then they sent it to BM for blade replacement. It's an exclusive 940 and >$200. I like the design so giving the retailer and BM a chance to make it right. Blade edge profile was bad. I had to chime in since I expect great customer service for MAP pricing and BM legacy company reputation. We'll see if I get contacted soon or I need to call to remind everyone.

BTW, I don't mind MAP since it tries to level the playing field for retailers and manufacturers. I plan to buy a 940-1, but no local dealers near me has stock of more than one or a display unit. I'll need to find a dealer on my next trip in March that has a good inventory so I can exchange the knife on-site. Not going to buy new BM knives online anymore.

Either I ask the dealer, If I know them, and have a reliable contact there. Otherwise, I'm very lucky to have a REI store close by where I can examine the knife myself. Good example, just picked up a 319-1 Proper and found, with the light just right, a REALLY small ding on one of the liners. It's not a big deal, will probably keep it. Prices are what they are, with these contacts I make out OK.

As a consumer I certainly do not want to see big price increase especially if it is purely price increase of current models without changing anything. With that being said, I would like to see more BMs in the $200-300 range as a result of using better materials (steels, titanium scales, 3D cf scales) on existing models or new models. For example, a full size grip in M390 or cpm 20cv with 3D machined cf scales @ $240 or a mini grip with the same setup @ $200.
