How much knife do you REALLY need?

I could easily make either my Strider PT CC , Rinaldi Matrix , Erickson Slippie or Case Sodbuster Jr my only carry knife , either will do exactly what I need.

However because of my love of knives , and not having to decide ; I carry all 4 , though the Rinaldi see's most of the work.

For my uses , a 3" blade is sufficient.... seldom do I need more , but when I do , I have that covered as well ;)
 
I don't understand the question. Too much knife?

Next week, I am buying a custom made hatchet for cutting my morning bagle. :)
 
This guitar-pick sized blade (JK Tin Knife) is surpisingly useful and can easily be worn as a necker, in your front pocket in its sheath or in an Altoids tin.

In a lot of cases, people that don't properly know how to use a knife will lean towards big knives, especially hunting knives. Then again there are people that just like big knives which is o.k.

I know how to properly use a knife. And i use pretty much only larger blades. My EDC is between 4" to 12" , my woods blades a little bigger.

one should use the blade that is applicable to the job, and for me, a larger blade is appropriate for EDC and the job.

just saying. The size of a blade someone carries IS IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM, INDICATIVE OF THEIR KNIFE SKILLS...........:grumpy:
 
I couldn't agree more. As I said w-a-y back on page 1, I carry larger blades too, and I know how to use 'em also.

I can't help but wonder if there aren't some "sour grapes" going on here. People who can't carry a larger blade, whether it's because of legal or societal issues, might be tempted to convince themselves that nobody "needs" that bigger knife. Well folks, sometimes you just do.
 
Same here. It exists through college as well, but I just feel naked without having at least a pen knife. I'm always seeing people with pocket clips showing, so it can't be that bad.

Luckily, nobody bats an eye at my little pen knife either. I've even received compliments on it. You know that Burger King commercial with the mini burgers? Yeah, it's like that.

Really? I didn't think any university had that policy. I frequently sharpen my pencils with my slipjoints and no one even notices. I would never carry in highschool.

Though all I carry are slipjoints these days. They are all pretty small except for one of them.
 
My main EDC is a large Griptilian. However my last 2 purchases were a Spyderco Urban, and a Bark River Bumble Bee, both 2 1/2" blades. So I need enough blade length to cut stuff I guess. :p
 
Except for in the kitchen, I could make it just fine with the Vic Farmer and my Laplander folding saw.
 
I like my Emersons I have and they get alot of use. They do just fine for almost all I use a knife for. But, I have become very fond of my Bocotti Inlay Classic Sebbie. Since perfecting the ability to put a crazy edge on it, I really feel little "need" for a custom or anything more expensive.

On the other hand, I "want" as many customs as I can get my mitts on and my wallet will allow. When you use each one, its a new experience. Its amazing how materials and fit and finish can make the job quicker and easier.I have found myself saying, man that was easy. The job is done before you know it when you reach for your knife, and you do not have to fumble with the knife to open it.

The lines always get blurred when you take something as useful as a knife and turn it into a hobby.;)

Thanks. I spend a lot of time thinking about that particular line.

My current EDC are a Buck Sirus assisted opener and a Boker Subcom, that was a surprise, freebie with a knife that I bought on the forum. I don't have a clue why I settled on those two, out of all the knives that I own. Neither of those knives are the best for most of the things that I use my knife for. They just are the ones that found there way into my pocket and seem to be holding out against other knives, that I own, that I could carry, that actually would be better choices for what I use a knife for. Go figure.

I wonder how long it would take me to actually need a knife, if I didn't carry one?
 
My college educated sense tells me I only need the Victorinox "Rancher" I carry in my left front pocket.
However, my knifenut sense assures me I need the Burke "Rockstar" in my right front pocket.
(And the 18 other folders I have stashed around) :rolleyes:
 
The knife needs of the regular American vs the knife needs of a knife knut that posts on bladeforums is a very different thing. Most people get by with a sak classic, or other small penknife. However the knife affictionado needs something for lots of senerios that the Joe working guy never thinks of, thus never needs. Somehow our grandfathers got by with a simple little 2 blade pocket knife with about 2 inches of blade for the big blade. Heck, the Iceman discoved in the glasier in the Alps had a flint knife that had a tad under 2 inches of blade.

The flint and obsidian blades I saw in the museum out at Mesa Verde all had blades about 1 3/4 to 2 inches. Somehow the old indians out there managed to cultivate corn, skin deer, and live with very small knapped blades. The demonstration by the park ranger/naturalist using a single flake off an obsidian chunk cut off a hindquarter from a road killed deer. Went right through the hide and meat. The flake was about the size of a very small penknife.

Need? For 99% of the time a classic or Russells ultimate pen knife will do just fine. For food prep, there's kitchen knives.

Of course, zombi killing and Walter Mity adventures need something bigger.:D

I thought that it was just me. This of course is not about all zombies. Some of my best friends are zombies. I would even let my sister date one.
 
Most people get along without knives, only using knives at home in the kitchen.
And even then you could survive with out any bigger problems, buying only food that required no knife to prepare.

You don't NEED a knife.

I NEED a knife, because foods which are all prepared so as to not require a knife cost more.
I don't HAVE more money, so I NEED a knife.
