How much knife do you REALLY need?

absolutely. Have you ever seen nancy pelosi?

ok, so that pic may be altered... but not a whole lot.

I need and carry two knives; one for SD and one for utility. My SD folder needs at least a 4" blade, and should open via the wave feature. Typically this would be a Spyderco Endura. My SD blade is never used for utility purposes.

My utility blade varies. I may carry a SAK, a Leatherman or a lightweight Spyderco.

I do occasionally carry a fixed blade, but follow the same parameters; one for SD and one for utility.

I need at least a 7" blade....on a kitchen...to cut bread and pies. As for EDC I would not be comfortable using anything below 3.5". I used to carry a spyderco mouse on my keychain a while back, it forked fine for openning packages or cutting tape with light slice motion. But for something like cutting apples, wood sticks, or just cutting for long time it will suck. Not only due to tiny blade size, but also because of its small handle.

Of course a lot of this depends on what we do in our day to day lives. I work on life support equipment as my day job and I’m a semi-retired musician, I still play every day and at least once a week with a band. I’m also a craftsman, I make musical instruments and do a lot of leather work.

Virtually everyday of my life for at least 40 years I’ve carried a SAK, currently the Climber. I also carry an open assist Leek. I have a need to open a knife single handed. These two cover a lot of ground and unless I’m incarcerated or flying they will be in my pocket.

Let's be honest, many of us carry a lot more knives, or larger knives then we really need. I've tried only carrying a Spyderco Lava for a couple weeks, and found that I need nothing more. :( A bit harder to justify large folders now... Definitely an enlightening experience, if nothing else.

That was my experience. I understand that it will most likely not be your's. I do not want to turn this into a flame war.

So, putting aside the macho BS, how much knife do YOU really need?

After having been an Alaska Registered Guide and bush pilot for more than thirty-five years, most of my macho BS is worn out. Given that, I carry a Parker Cutlery "Hunter's Pride" which I bought during one of my many trips to the office of the Alaska Professional Hunters Association. Bought two, in fact. Used them for caping sheep, since the 2" blade worked well in tight places. These days, I have little use for anythihg larger, but wouldn't be without the small knife. It's extremely well made (Japan), and worth every dime I paid for it, whatever that was . . . . .
