How much knife for hiking

Ok, to change the direction of this thread further: ESEE 3 or Mora Garberg?
My last pennies allow for either. Anyone use one extensively? Seen any flaws?

ESEE 3 is a better utility and food prep knife because of the thinner stock. If you might split wood, the Garberg will handle it like a champ. If your primary tasks will be processing wood, then the Garberg wins. Otherwise, I think the ESEE 3 is a better option for all around use (good for EDC too).

Another thing: the point of the Garberg is ideal for getting the last bits of peanut butter from the jar.

That’s it. After 9 pages of reading, I’ve decided for all the rest of my hikes/outing”, I will carry ALL my knives. I’ll have “high weight exercise,” “knife preparedness” and “the cool factor” all covered. They may not get me out of a jam…but if I die, at least I’ll be able to admire them all. 😂🤣😂🤣

First news headline to read…”Man dies lost in wilderness with WAY too many knives…what a crazy nut.”

Have you been spying on me and my EDC? GET OUT OF MY MIND!

Just curious, and I am asking for a friend of course.:) Don't you think that a Bear Grylls ultimate whatever is OK predominantly for a campsite? I mean,, it's understandable somebody to enjoy to make a show for themselves by pretending of being a no-nonsense outdoorsman. But, once the same person hits a trial, especially a packed one, then an exposed to the others tactical fixed blade will look to some extent ridiculous, much more ridiculous and kind of annoying compared with the campsite? So, the same camper probably is better to leave the cool tactical stuff in the tent, and to go on a day hike just with one Opinel #6?

I quite like the knife. I like the hammer for tent pegs.

Swap the garberg for a kansbol?

That is good to know, thanks. Anybody figured out the best knife for slicing a marzipan loaf while on a trek? This can be used as a proxy to be determined the most suitable knife for hiking.

Probably the French, they will stop the hike, set up a picnic and use a Laguiole with a cork screw to open a bottle of wine, and use said knife for the marzipan and to,s;ice sausages and cheese. ;) The French know how to go on a hike in style……just always bring a basket full of food and a bottle of wine.

I’d carry 46” of thin piano wire which could also be used to make a snare or two and you could use it to silently take out a subject that encroaches on your camping spot.

Tin cans and a trip wire would be less lethal, still alert you to their presence and maybe scare them away….wait…maybe that was for animals.

Not much into hiking but do regularly walk for hours in the woods hunting. Large animals are not present so I am not trying to kill anything that could eat me.

I generally carry a small light fixed blade, like a Mora and a medium sized folding hunting knife with a saw on it.

I find it is more important to go with company, tell people your whereabouts and what time you expect to be back. A phone is a must these days for communication and for positioning / maps.

That's an interesting benchmark. I'm thinking either Opinel or SAK due to the thin blades. You really want a precision cut for that!

OP... I was fiddling with a Ouija board last night while I was on a midnight hike, slaying coyotes left and right, and I got a response from Sharp&Fiery's ghost from beyond the grave.
Buy the ESEE 3.

Thanks! Finally I have an answer to the point. Even thought i liked the feedback of Jsega51 Jsega51 and cbach8tw cbach8tw for the unorthodoxy, one is referring to camping and the piano wire is too tactical for my taste, and the other is about picnic - and I do not think i will hike with a picnic basket with a bottle of wine inside. The big Douk Douk or the similar Squirrel (blade about 3-9/16") looks the best from the limited numbers of knives I have, but will they excel?

Oh, just in case, if somebody else decides to hike with a loaf of marzipan or vanilla cake, please learn how to share safely if a bear decides to join you during your lunch stop. And I am not really sure a Ziploc will completely seal the smell.

Where can a guy even go to get a marzipan loaf around here?
I saw a marzipan in an Aldi Store the last time I visited one of these a few years ago. The marzipan was German, I think, and it was really delicious. To be on topic, what kind of Spyderco can come close to the functionality, universality, and the mix of durability/toughness/robustness/slicing capabilities of the Douk Douk, if any?:)

rhino was unaware that one could get marzipan in loaf form.
