Before I joined this forum I collected reasonably priced knives, obscure production models and various major brands. Since joining and learning so much about custom makers and metallurgy that's out the window lol. I now have joined the Busse clan, purchased a few custom knives, starting making Kydex and started making my own knives.
I'm incredibly thankful but wonder how many others have joined this forum and then spent thousands?

Not much actually. I've never spent more then $150 or $160 on a knife and rarely go over $100. I'm good about keeping a budget and sticking to it. My parents were big on budgets and I guess those lessons stuck with me.

Each month I put $ into a "toy" fund. That fund covers knives, guns, ammo, gear, etc. so I haven't waded into the Sebenza, Hinderer, mid tech, or custom knife world.

I found what works for me after 30+ years carrying a knife, you just have to find what works for you. ;)

$60

But I know what you mean. When I found that Exchange a few years ago, I was hooked. Not on buying, but seeing the huge variety of nice knives. Learning about knives became addicting. That had to suffice though... I had to employ the self control button full on because there's no way I'd be able to buy all the knives I liked!

I've also held off buying guns. Seems I'm not smart enough to juggle to expensive hobbies lol.
For the most part, I simply stopped buying guns. I had all I needed anyway. What has BF cost me? Membership $. The rest was purely voluntary in terms of buying anything. But the forum provided the rounded information and access to the knives. I pretty much have all the knives I need too and slowing down the acquisitions significantly now. Been mostly buying fixed blades which I like the best but use the least until I started edc'ing a small fixed blade. That was a huge change for me. Not everyone can do this and not everyone feels comfortable with a fixed blade on their belt. That is where I was 5 years ago (uncomfortable). Tried it out with something small and it worked for me.

I dont want anyone to think I'm bashing BF. I'm grateful for all the knowledge I've gained from this site. Until a few months ago I barely understood metallurgy and didnt know about most of the boutique upscale makers that are so commonly traded here. I appreciate the many members who take the time to share their skills, opinions, and testing. I mean the user that hammered his Busse into his driveway was the sales pitch my fiancee needed lol.
Just pointing out that my previous naivety was economical. I went from never spending more than $150 on a blade to holding back on more $600 plus blades. I figured I cant be the only.... least I hope.

@94lnk I "held back" on $100 knives. Call it my sense of value, or call it being unwilling to part with my money. I learned. If this is a hobby, ya gotta play.

I remember resisting spending $20 on a new knife..... that said, $18-$25 was the general going rate for many of the Case slip joints years ago. I would never have spent $30 on one at that time. Income didn't matter. It was a matter of a value system that had been developed since I was a kid.

To date, $32,756.33 but who’s counting :D
I really don’t know how much money I’ve spent that can be attributed to BF.
I would blame my lack of self control more than anything else. The education I’ve gained from being here has helped me make the right choice when I just have to have one more knife. Likewise, it’s easy to pass on knives that would have been a wrong choice for me.
The friendships, acquaintances, and entertainment has been priceless.

A basic membership fee, gold membership fee, and maybe $400 over the past few years in knives my fellow porch and Buck members have turned me.
Most expensive was $75 , most well under $60, and most often they're older traditional knives I have to find off Ebay for generally pretty cheap.

Really this place is the only media source I have for learning about knives and that's how I like it , nobody is selling or advertising knives to me they're just discussing them and it's great.
