How much money has Blade Forums cost you?

The Bladeforums hadn’t cost me a cent.

Collectors have a natural drive to collect. It is a personality quirk that occurs with a percentage of the population and drives them to procure, amass and organize things. It is kind of the genetic driver behind the kind of behavior that leads to the scientific method of understanding.

The Bladeforums can channel that energy, but it is was already there, so without the forums you would have spent the same amount on some other hobby. You would have collected coins or stamps, or guns, or boats, or some really rare spices of African beetle.... Just about everything has been collected by someone at some point.

One of my favorites was the English noble who collected mounted birds during the 19th century and had packed his family estate (literally a castle) with over 3 million examples. That collection was eventually acquired by the New York Museum of Natural History and was the core of their ornithological department.

So let’s not blame the forums for our spending problems. This place has only help you to stay away from stuffed birds, pound puppies, Pez dispensers and other material things.

For every $1 I spent on BM buying knives, I received at least $2 of worth in knives & extremely friendly service....if not more. I've got some amazing pieces here <3 Thank you BM members!

So I do like BM a lot for ONLY buying the knives and reading some research info on history of knives.

The only downside at BM: I nearly stopped all my activities (do post once a while) in General Discussion Forum due to bullying and harassing behavior from a veteran 30K+ post member who had been insulting and attacking other BM members as well... And moderators here do not seem to give sh*t either. :D Would be nice if moderators started enforcing some rules of descent mature behavior.

Cost ? I actually have no idea... On the other hand, I know perfectly well how much enjoyment, entertainment, learning, fun and good times (and knives...) this forum brought into my life. Way more than enough to outweigh any induced costs (like unnecessary knives and impulse buys...).

Not2Sharp- What an eloquent and honest reply. It's true I've always collected something even as a child I collected comic books. I've got a collection of watches, guns, vintage tools, and guitars. This is the forum that has educated me to the point that I realized enough to expand a collection. I was/am shocked and impressed by the depth of some members studies and expertise. I thoroughly enjoy learning new subjects and this forum is catalyst for that. I mean a gentleman posted the other day how he tested like 48 metals for edge retention and the other day I read about the composition of various handle materials. This new found knowledge leads me to want to own and experiment with the many different knife components. I know it's my fault for spending money, I'm just saying that BF is both my online resource center and a place to dump untold somes of money lol.

Honestly I don’t want to know but hobbies do cost money most of the time so I’d say don’t worry too much about it.

Not much.....usually when I see a knives I like. I check reviews on the site I'm going to buy from and other buying BladeHQ, BladeOPS, etc. I'm new to collecting and price limit is approximately $100. The opinions here can be confusing pro or con. Many posts are about knives with cost above what I can afford or willing to spend. Bladeforums is great for getting general information. Plus you can talk about knives without someone thinking your creepy!!!!

About $500 on a Hinderer I probably wouldn't have been that interested in without seeing the Hinderer-thread, $400ish? on a Halftrack from the exchange, and $100ish on a custom kitchen knife I bought for Christmas. Really the only things I can directly contribute to the vortex of enabling that is BF:D And the membership, but eh.

But like someone else said, I've also saved money on knives that have been slammed on this site, and I've learned a ton.

I was buying over priced knives long before I join the forum.;)
I was too. But I can honestly say that I have bought MORE knives since joining and many I would never have considered buying. Often it would be because I wouldn't know about the knife until I ran into it browsing some store. I seldom visit knife retailers online just to browse. I see little point. I might be looking for something specific, but that is about it. I do visit KSF's website fairly often to look at specific handmade knives that they might have for sale. But generally it is a sporadic effort.

The spirit of the original post was for all the extra knives you might have bought because of the enablers here as well as the increased exposure to different things.

...cost me a ton...but I'm content...
The Exchange also saved me a ton over new commercial sales...

One day I decided I needed a good knife and came here looking for information and recommendations. At the time I considered $50 dollars was expensive for a knife and I'd only need 1. Now, an acceptable "normal" price is around $200 and I'm very happy to have a large selection to choose from. I don't necessarily see Bladeforums as the cause of my spending so much on knives, but rather the reason I get good value for my money. :)

Better to think about it as an investment into hard currency as a hedge against more volatile assets. ;)
I just told my fiancee something similar as I edge near another $400 knife purchase. Its tangible goods with limited availability.
