How nice should I be?

I had a trade with a guy (his first trade) and I shipped out right away. He pretty much ignored e-mails and PMs for the first few days but said he would ship out on the 11th priority mail. Then he finally answered one of my visitor messages and said he would ship out asap and I would have the knife by the end of the week depending on how fast USPS would ship it. (stop with the : jerkit : icon).

Well the end of the week has arrived and I am out a Benchmade 585S mini barrage which is worth more than the blade I traded for anyway and the worst part is.. I left positive feedback praising the guy thinking he was another guy I just traded with who was fantastic.

Still no shipping number, no knife.. Methinks I'm gettin' boned on this one.

Oh, and here is another good one.. he hasn't even contacted me about my knife that he now owns.

Usually stuff like this gets posted in U,B,&U section. Some things crossed my mind while reading your thread.

1. Did he have any feedback at all?
2. Why did you give him feedback prior to the transaction being complete, especially since you haven't gotten your knife yet?
3. If you're sending him visitor messages & not PMs, I'd state in it that unless he contacts you, you're going to have to post a thread in G,B,&U section on his ignoring you.

Visitor messages can be read by everyone, so that might get his attention, too.

I wrote that I left him feedback accidently, thinking I was leaving it for someone else. I left it there to give him a chance to man up.

Just didn't want to go the good bad and ugly route yet. Notice I didn't mention any names.

The guy got a nice knife which he has right now. Don't you think he would leave me some feedback?

This is not a discussion about a knife, it's a discussion about a knife deal, so it is definitely going to FEEDBACK.

You can upgrade it to a complaint if he continues to ignore you.

I always make people who have only a few post, and limited to no feedback ship first.
If they wont ship first and let me inspect the knife before I ship mine out, then I don't go through with the deal.

I hope this guy comes around and makes good on your deal.

Also, you can contact spark in tech and support, and tell him you made a mistake leaving him feedback and see if he'll change it for you.

I've now been e-mailing him for a few days asking him how he likes my knife and asking if he can in the very least, leave me some feedback.

If he hasn't just quit bladeforums or changed his screen name at this point, I'm sure the excuse will be "calm down, I was out of town for awhile"

Mail - nothing

E-mail - nothing

Visitor messages - nothing

What are the jerkit icons for? why don't we just get rid of them?

Brennanscott, we understand you are upset and it appears you have every right to be.
It is time you mentioned who this person is, maybe 1 of us knows him and can persuade him to complete this trade. Also what was the transaction date?

The Jerkit smiles are mostly used in the Whine and Cheese subforum. There really is no need for them outside of that place.

Good luck,

Tonym

I'll just give it more time. It's going on two weeks I think. I hate to hold anyone up to the flames. For all I know the guy is having some problems. Hell, it's not the way I would do business but it is what it is.

I'll lighten up for awhile.

P.S. Got it about the jerkit icons, guess it's kind of a common sense rule. My bad.

How much more time is needed???

There simply is no (legitimate) excuse for handling a deal like this.

Name the marooooon!!!!!

Just heard from the guy, gave me a tracking number. Said he was gonna ship on the 11th first thing in the morning after he offered to ship first.

Actually waited till he got the knife and shipped out at 4:07 PM on the 20th (9 days later)

So I guess it will all work out but I still feel guilty having accidently left that positive feedback in case the next poor SOB is using the feedback to guage a possible trade with this guy.

Should I just let it be and figure this guy is just new at this?

Absolutely not. You both agreed to do a deal one way, and he chose to do whatever the heck he felt like doing, regardless of the agreement. That tells a lot about a person's character.

PS- By checking the feedback you have "Left for others" it isn't too hard to figure out about whom you are speaking. ;)

Ask Spark to delete that feedback. Then give him a neutral at best and explain that he didn't ship as agreed.

What happens next time, when he doesn't like the knife he gets and doesn't ship his end and maybe waits a month to return ship? People can see he's new and should be warned he's unreliable.

That's what feedback is for.

Makes sense. Thanks.

Update, got the knife in the mail today. The guy said he would make good and not only is the knife in fantastic shape, he threw in a user Benchmade Vex with it.

I can't really in good conscience trash this guy, I really feel that he won't pull this again.

Thoughts?

Well, at least you got your knife & he threw in something extra (Probably because of how late he was).

I'd just chalk it up to a learning experience that really only cost you time. No $ or items were lost, so that's good.

It's always a good thing to check on if the person you're going to trade with has much of a history doing so & if it's positive. Granted, everyone has to start sometime, but for the most part, the general rule is a new person usually ships 1st.

While I've had people ship 1st, I'll sometimes offer the person the option of sending me the tracking # & then I'll ship. Granted, the tracking # just means a package was sent, but it all depends on how you feel about it.

Also, we all are human & stuff happens. Sometimes unforeseen things happen & we can't ship right away. However, communication is golden. I think timely communication goes a long way & helps one understand about a situation better.

Good luck with future transactions.
