How often are you adding to your collection?

I have about seven folders. The collection was pushing thirty a couple years ago, then I was laid off, and became a full time knife maker instead of taking government stimulus money. And in that first year, that also meant selling off most of my folder collection, nearly all my production fixed blades, and cashing out my RRSPs (think 401K, but for Canadians) and taking a loan from a friend (which went towards steel and heat treatment, and which I paid back in full a few months before the agreed upon date). So at least I was able to get through the year without taking a handout.

Now my collection consists of two knives I carry and use, a Resilience lightweight in 8Cr3MoV (because the silly things in S35VN must have gone down with the ship), a Tenacious Lightweight in S35VN. I also have a Cold Steel Code 4, Manix 2 XL and a Manix 2, which I keep around in order to make reblades. I am still eagerly awaiting the prototypes back from heat treatment.

And I own a Cold Steel Voyager Tanto XL.

I also have a couple of $10 folders I inherited from my dad, but they don't really count, as they are pretty junky. And I will acquire a Cold Steel Airlite and Recon 1 at some point for reblades, though the prototypes are already in process for those, as a couple of guys kindly lent me their knives to use for the project. Once I see that project through with these models, any further folders I buy will be for the purpose of reblades only, as the Resilience and Tenacious are really all I want or need for folding knives for my personal use, at least for the foreseeable future.

My wife teases me and will exclaim that Im in my "gun phase", "knife phase", "car phase", or "prepping phase". I have been heavily into my other phases prior to this year as they were more of a priority. Ive only purchased 1 knife since getting back into it last month, but it was about 1k. Ive got plans to buy 1 more expensive knife and 2 more EDC type Spyderco/Benchmade knives to match my brass and titanium EDC. I already have a PM2 with copper scales for my copper EDC. I doubt I'll buy more than 5 knives this year. I have a very small collection of knives. Most are functional good quality production knives that Im not afraid to use. The 2 expensive knives will be carried, but more like pocket candy.

Don't you keep any of the knives that you make for yourself?

I want to keep all of them. ;)

But yes, my EDC belt knife and necker are two I made for myself. They will eventually be replaced, I'm sure, and sold off as users/R&D knives. These are the ones I currently carry, along with my two folders (yes, yes, I EDC four knives, if anyone understands acutely, it should be the denizens of our BFs home).

Covid Bored !
Last two years , lock downs ( 23 hour stay at home orders by our local dictator ) ..
My knife purchases have been a minimum of two a month to maybe 4 a month .
I see something , I buy it .
Don't smoke / drink / do drugs / or throw money at women ! So there is money for knives and other interesting things that dont go Whoosh !!! down the toilet !
Just about everything purchased in the last 10 years I still have ..
It might be time to move a few things along , make space for more new stuff !

It used to be 1-2 knives every 1-4 years, but somewhere around 7 years ago things kind of went down the rabbit hole and took me with it. The last couple years increased to over 50 last year. This year, I made a commitment to ease back on the purchases, to focus on bigger purchases. which is why I've only ordered 10 in 2022. So much restraint...

Have about 10 (at the moment but could increase) that are “keepers” and about 10-15 that pretty much rotate in and out. I don’t have any knife shops close to me so my options are watching reviews on YouTube and buying to see if I like them. Soooo that pretty much means I have several incoming and outgoing per month. I don’t like to return my purchases just because I don’t like them. Sorry I’m all over the place 😆

I have a tendency to see a knife somewhere, like online or on youtube or whatever. Then for the next week or so ill be hyper fixated on it. Sure enough, its a knife thats usually hard to find, so the hunt becomes part of the process for me. Once I get it in hand its like "well then. I guess its time to sell it!". Rinse and repeat.

The "toy" fund is used to buy knives, firearms, ammo, gear, etc.
Exactly me too , only the name we use is "my personal entertainment " . :p

Our marriage is more important to me than even my knives , guns etc .

Really , the wife is very tolerant , all things considered , and she helps me to set reasonable limits to my insane depthless desires . 🤪

Until you've "made it " financially in business , it's not wise to be like that "fat man in the donut shop " , consuming all your produce !

Over 20 years of buying knives, giving away knives, selling, trading knives etc. I’ve gone through many phases. I can say I’ve settled down on the impulse buying. I’ve settled in and refined what works for me. My buying is more precise now. A few a year, 1 every 3-4 months.

I have a very strict policy that I only have a certain amount of knives, or knives in the knife fund. If I want another knife, then I have to sell one of my knives FIRST before I can buy another. Very strict indeed.

The only problem I've seen so far is every week my knife fund and number of knives keeps getting bigger and I keep not selling anything. Same thing happened with my last obsession, audio equipment 🤔
