How Often Do You Take Knife Breaks?

Just a quick question for you dedicated knife fans: How often do you decide you have enough [boxes of] knives (or your wife decides), and you take a break? And if so, how long do these breaks last, and what finally puts you back into a buying mode?

I also like firearms -- mostly handguns -- and one of those depletes my funds for awhile! But what about you? Are you interrupted by quantities, other hobbies or your spouse?

With the downturn of business of the recession (and the "recovery"), I've scaled back my knife purchases. I really enjoy knives (and guns, too, for that matter), and life has granted me many other responsibilities.

I guess I'm on a break. I actually haven't bought a knife since April 2010. Wait... I lie, I put in a custom order, but since I haven't gotten it yet, that doesn't count, right?:)

I guess I'm satisfied with the knives I have right now. There are some knives that I would really like to try (Strider PT, Small Sebenza, Mnandi, Yuna, XM-18 3", A few Spyderco) but right know I like what I'm carrying.

I take a break after each purchase. It usually lasts until the next purchase. ;)

Well I'm just off of my first knife break. This one has been close to a year, which was actually my first experience with this forum and knives being looked at as more than just a "pocket knife" . Back then I bought quite a few lower end knives. Then I commisioned another 1911 to be done and forgot all about knives, then got turned one to flashlights. Spent some months spending money on those and now I'm back to the knives again. And now the lower end stuff isn't doing it. I started stepping up with Kershaw (CB & Damascus Leek) , Benchmade Mini Griptilian, Livesay "woo" , some Alan Folts damascus "scraps" , and a Warren Thomas Micro Model 2 Tanto. I'm also talking with two different knife makers on a couple of more folders. So all that being said I need to take another break on knives and flashlights. Not to mention I'm still waiting on that 1911 to get finished and have another one planned. We also snowmobile and have ATV's so it's tough not taking breaks from certain hobbies.
My wife and I are trying for our first child together and I'm in panic mode to buy as much as possible since I'm sure I won't be able to after we get blessed with a little one.

Take a break?

Knives are as much a part of my life as breathing

+1!
may have 1 month off but that's cause of a lack of money, ordered things or when in decision on the next purchase(s)

a break like saying "that's enough"....no way!

My wife always puts me on a break....lol I did buy 6 custom knives and 2 Glocks last year. Seems I am always wanting something new but she convinces me 2 gun safes full of guns is too many for her.

I take knife breaks all the time. I'm just coming off a knife break now.

Usually it's the winter and cold weather that puts me off knives since I seem to always find less time to use them then. Once the weather is warm again and the sun is out I find more excuses to be outside using my knives.

Taking a break from knives affords me the opportunity to spend more time (and money) on my other favorite hobby, flashlights.

I have been on a break since April, I have bought one knife (CS Bird and Trout, $16). But my wife has filled the gap for me, a straight razor, Condor Golok, CS Kukri Machete, CS Rifleman's Hawk, and a Condor Kumunga. I has me an awesome wife!

It sort of depends. I have a variety of "hobbies of the moment" which I cycle through. I was on a knife kick about 6 months ago for a month or two, and now I'm back on one. I'm probably about to take a break and resume my cigar hobby. I also go through computer phases, skis, bicycles, and even blu-rays. As for how long each wave lasts, its no set time, I just seem to switch every once in a while.

I might go 3-4 months w/o buying a knife, and then all of a sudden I go on a 3-4 knife spree.

With the economy being stagnant, I usually have to sell one or two off to offset the spree.:grumpy:

My collection really isn't growing any more...it's "evolving".

good question, i take a break during the summer months because i ride a motorcycle
on a race track (trackdays), which is expensive, not to mention i need a set of tires
after every weekend of riding so knives has to be an "off" season thing for me. i wish i
could afford knife collecting year round, this site has made me want so many. i am
like a sponge here, and learning more with each visit.

very cool thread btw

I'm another with the 'cycle' mode rather than a 'break'. Last year early on was knives, then 1911's, holsters, then long range rifle, then hunting gear/optics/rifle, back to knives - then last week I stroked a check for honey's engagement ring :-)

I used to be gung ho with firearms, and bought a small arsenal over time. Then I moved on to flashlights, and bought way too many. Next came knives, and I have more than 50 people would actually "need". And lets not forget multitools.

I love these things because I either use them on a daily basis, or if not use them (gun), at least have them with me. I always, always have a gun, a light and a knife with me. These things are cool, and they help me manipulate my environment.

The urge to buy comes and goes, but never really goes away. At least for me. I've gone for a couple of years without buying a gun, until I bought a couple in 2010 (Ruger LCP and Kel-tec TK-9). I'm jonesing for another Springfield XD(m) right now. I ordered today a Wilderness Instructor's belt and Sidearmor holster for a .40 XD. A Fenix TK35 came in the mail last week (incredible light). And the knives never stop arriving. A SOG Twitch II and CS Medium Voyager are the most recent.

So for me, the buying never ends. It slows, it come and goes, but it never really stops. As I have said before, I don't spend money on bass boats, golf clubs or girlie bars, and we have zero debt, so blowing some buck on my toys is not so bad.

. . . I also like firearms -- mostly handguns -- But what about you? Are you interrupted by . . . your spouse?

Several years ago, my fiance said I had to choose between her and buying more guns. I'm happily single . . . with a roomfull of guns (and knives, of course). And my new girl carries, too. IMHO, if your woman is giving you grief about your guns and/or knives, then you're with the wrong woman.

As for other hobbies, Panerai has a lot of my money. To wit:

?:confused:?:confused:?:confused:, a break? What's a break? I'm just getting started. We don't need no stinking breaks!:thumbup::)

I can't remember how many times I bought my very last knife. Each time, I'll take about 4-6 weeks break and then I decide I absolutly need another last one (wich is not true). I don't feel well when I don't have a knife in order. :o
