How Often Do You Take Knife Breaks?

Im with you guys, In the last 6mos Puma CS Benchmade Tops and ESEE have all got a slice of my $. Im coming to the conclusion that if it comes with a great sheath Ill use it alot.Thats why ESEE Izula, 4 and 5 have become the blades I carry full time. I have enough knives er except for Tops Hawks Hellion Hmm maybe a Junglas crap!

IMHO, if your woman is giving you grief about your guns and/or knives, then you're with the wrong woman.

Words to live by. Now my wife doesn't know exactly the costs of some of these items (guns, knives, flashlights, ATV stuff, snowmobile stuff and when I had a boat, performance stuff) but she does turn a blind eye to it. Most of the time I have to real myself in because I feel quilty, expecially when I see that she has an eye on a nice purse or something (when hers is falling apart) and she won't buy it because she doesn't want to spend the money. So I always encourage her to get some nice things for herself once in a while.

I am getting ready to start my "break". I just received a CS American Lawman just so I could see how hard it would be to remove the coating without trashing the blade (Its easy by the way) and I should be receiving a ZT0551 this week from Dave here on the forum. After these, something is really gonna have to be earth moving before I buy it. I spent way too much money this past year on "toys" just because something peaked my interest. I usually end up trading or selling these items in the long run. so I am going to try to be more selective in my purchases. In theroy anyway......

Ok so my break just ended a few minutes ago on the maker's for sale forum.

I am now ON break AGAIN. :p

I really don't know what your talking about; a break from knives? My wife; well my wife thinks I'm crazy and doesn't allow me to buy knives anymore so what she doesn't know won't hurt her. Besides I have so many that she thinks that a new one is just another from my current collection. :D

Several years ago, my fiance said I had to choose between her and buying more guns. I'm happily single . . . with a roomfull of guns (and knives, of course). And my new girl carries, too. IMHO, if your woman is giving you grief about your guns and/or knives, then you're with the wrong woman.

That was poetic and inspiring! :D

You are a roll model for the rest of us!

Cheers!

I'll probably do what I did with my other hobbies: take a break when I have a knife for every task, or too many to use. There is a saturation point, I'm just not there yet...

Just a quick question for you dedicated knife fans: How often do you decide you have enough [boxes of] knives (or your wife decides), and you take a break? And if so, how long do these breaks last, and what finally puts you back into a buying mode?

I also like firearms -- mostly handguns -- and one of those depletes my funds for awhile! But what about you? Are you interrupted by quantities, other hobbies or your spouse?

Hand tools fascinate me, especially ones that can manipulate wood well.
I can justify only so many hand planes, chisels, knives, weird scribes, #4 pencils and odd tools that are rarely needed.
I couldn't have ended a splurge any better than with my ZT 551.
I'm happy now.
Actually, now that I'm out of the rat race I've found that I'm pretty satisfied with a whole lot less.

I'm almost always on break. I'm a completely broke college student, and I generally can't afford anything interesting. The other part is that I almost never need to cut anything anyways, so it's difficult to justify purchases, especially as I'm completely broke.

If I had a particular need to fill (that I could fill CHEAPLY), or ran across a really great deal, I could make it happen. That's about it.

I consider myself on a break - for the last few months. I have not purchased much, two or three knives at most. I have sold a few I do not like that much. I have traded a few. It actually feels quite nice. I had some periods when I would buy a new knife every week. It is like chain-smoking, the pleasure is spoiled by guilt... Now I get the maximum from every purchase and every trade. I have got a short to buy list. I am sure that I will follow it through. But I am in no hurry.
Sometimes it has to do with stress - the more stress, the more you buy. I can not say I am stress-free now. But certainly it is not the most stressfull period of my life. I hope I will be able to maintain rational attitude to things - hobby included.

i don't necessarily take a "break", i just wait until i find a certain knife steel in a design that i really want, then i buy it.

p.s. will the wife care if your new purchase is a "needed" kitchen knife? ;)

As a student from September-June, I have to work full-time construction all summer to save up enough to support my balisong addiction all year round. :D

When I take a break: no good deals on the exchange.

When I don't take a break: when there are good deals on the exchange... which pretty much means.... I never take a break :)

As for other hobbies, Panerai has a lot of my money. To wit:

I absolutely LUST after a Panerai Radiomir 210... Panerai are classic, understated and just beautiful...

Breaks? Nah. Why, life is too short as it is.
I would say this, of my Hobby (addictions) folks around me have suffered with over the years, I say this because I have quite enjoyed the interests BUT those who do not share the enthusiasm often choose to make your joy their pain - Knives have been one of the lesser evils.
I would just offer this, NEVER put yours or anyone who you are responsible for well being at risk and you have nothing to worry about. Moderation and safety are the guiding principles.
Stow your gear safely and only spend what you have to lose and all will be fine.

I will let you know when and if I ever take a break, but its not looking like a break is anywhere in my future. I'm a knife-addict for the duration. I'm like a whacked out bladehead always looking for my next fix.

I've taken a break from one hand opening folders, except for when I find a Spyderco Starmate; pick up the Native V or large Lum; get an SMF and SNG; get desert ironwood large and small Sebenzas.
