I'm 43. I'll spread some advice to anyone younger than me (which seems to be not too many). Dad always told me since I was young to protect my ears. Grandpa was mostly deaf by 70, as a farmer running equipment and chainsaws and shooting rifles. Dad started protecting his ears in his 40's, but already had done a lot of damage. He cleared trees for the electric company, and didn't wear hearing protection in his 20's and 30's, and then finally wised up.

I'm glad I heeded that advise, I can still hear a mosquito flying by on the other side of the room.

I’m careful to protect my ears. I always wear double protection when I’m shooting or working with or near loud equipment. And I don’t listen to loud music. I’m glad to hear that it’s all worth it.

Sadly I did not get that advice when I was young. I used to shoot .308 rifle and .357 revolver without protection. Add in many years of loud music (when I grew up if you couldn't feel it, it wasn't loud enough), evidenced by my current setup of a pair of 15" woofer speakers driven by over 2000 W, I have tinnitus that never goes away and I have trouble following conversations in a crowded noisy room. When you are young you feel invincible, and by the time hearing loss becomes apparent it is too late.

I am XXX. 😂 Though many times I feel like twice as much, mentally at least. I don't know, I enjoy traditional things (literature, music, knives obviously), prefer calm and mindful activities, and already don't understand younger generation. Also, people say I tend to grumble too much. 😁 No, I appreciate modern stuff as well, though pretty much for practical reasons. How else would I be in such a great community, huh? ;)

Don't feel bad, a lot of us are right up there with ya. I don't recall when, but I think it was in the 1970's that the NRA and EPA started to recommend ear protection while shooting. Way too late for me, I'd. been shooting for years before that. We used to have indoor rifle meets when I was like 12 ro 14, and we thought it was normal to go to school on Monday morning with a ringing in our ears!😳

I have a lot of high frequency hearing loss, but I can still hold a semi intelligent conversation in a restaurant, so I'll knock on wood. 😉

68. Married with two Kids, a girl 20 and a boy 18. Both with full ride scholarships.
Not retired..just tired. The kids have already taken dibs on who gets which knife(s).
At 55 the Flanders riser broke on my '52 panhead giving me 20 broken bones and no more lower left leg.
I was hoping to get out of here in one piece, now I'm hoping for two.
That's what brought me here. I'm not a typist or an internet guy. But this place is great!
