Amazing properties of BLO this thing has turned out great so far with minimal work. I plan to give it a few more light coats

My ebay Plumb arrived today and I spent a good while sleuthing on google trying to date it as well. (Incidentally, a google search for "plumb hatchet" will get you a lot of pics of Double Ott's collection) So, here's what little I've gleaned.

They started adding red dye to the handles around or just before 1922 so that jives with yours being early 1900's like Thomas Linton said.

They stopped using a screw wedge in 1955 when they switched to the permabond.

Mine, which looks just like Double Otts only more scratched up, is probably 1940s, though that's a guess based on several different auctions (not ebay but still...) of hatchets with identical marking being labeled as 1940s.
