How old should your child be before getting their first Busse Knife?

Hi all,

It's been forever since I've posted. Life has been brutal and busy.

I have a seven year old son and was thinking of possibly getting him a Busse knife for his 8th B-day in October. Is this too young? If so, what age do you all think is a good age for your first Busse (and I want his first knife to be a Busse)?

Also, what Busse knife would you recommend for a child? I know there are TONS of factors involved in such a decision, but I at least wanted to ask it here. :)

Thanks!

John

Honestly I'd avoid giving a young child something with the monetary value of a busse. If they want a solid quality knife and you want to get them something along the lines of busse, I'd go with one of the less expensive scrapyard offerings or something.

I would not want my child's first knife to be a Busse honestly...that's a lot like making a teenager's first car a brand new BMW. They're guaranteed to wreck it / trash it / worse lose it.

You know your child (and budget) better than I do so don't let me sound judgemental, I'm just saying that I wouldn't trust an eight year old with a 300+ dollar blade.

Let him learn on a cheap knife first, so you don't go nuts when he leaves it in the forest somewhere. I was about 8 when I got my first buck knife, and it spent a few nights alone in the rainy woods for sure. I'd say giving an 8 yr old a knife that most 18 year olds couldn't afford is jumping ahead a bit.

Definitely hold out on a Busse/kin knife until he's older. I'd say around ten years old for his first Busse/kin blade. Which one? Show him some of the different Bussekin blades and see what he likes best. SOD would probably be a good first Bussekin, small enough that he can handle it with his smaller stature/hands but bigger than what should be his first blade (IMO) a Victorinox or Leatherman. One of those would be the better choice for a first blade (easier to replace, cheaper, and all he really needs at his age).

I got my son a custom knife made for him before he was born
And he will work for it
Get him a cg just in case he does leave it out but make him work for it so he will appreaciate it more and will be more likly to take care of it

I got my first knife and first gun for my 8th Christmas - a buck folder and a single shot 20ga. Use of both was pretty closely supervised until I was 10; after 10 I carried the knife everywhere daily and both were kept in my own room. This was in the late 70s...

Jerry Made & designed the HACK Bear Cub for Katie when she was one :)

Old enough to appreaciate it, sure as heck not 8 years old. It will get lost, or he will ruin it trying to sharpen it, snap the tip using it as a pry bar, lose it when using as a throwing knife. At that age a scout pocket knife or victorinox is more adequate if you ask me. Maybe a carbon steel fixed blade, something that rusts easily if not taken care of properly. That way he will learn how to care for tools.

get'em a boyscout knife. If I hadn't had all the inferior knives i had before i got a busse, I don't know if i would have appreciated the collection of busse's I have now nearly as much.

Gotta fingerpaint before you can picasso.

LOL, 27

That's how old my son was when he was finally able to keep a less expensive knife for a whole year without losing it !

So I gave him a Busse, and he still has it

My dad had a rolex gmt for 35 years, used it a hand full of times,
Recently gave it to me, I'm 30 years old.
That watch will be my boys watch some day but his first watch will be a casio, so my dads rolex doesn't end up in a pawn shop or beat to hell!!

Nephew, at age 9, saved and bought his first, a Rat Weiler, at Knob Creek directly from Jerry's hand.

He used the snot outta it, and had to resend it back for a spa treatment within 3 years.

I knife in general is a lot of responsibility. I think if you want to teach him responsibility and you think he is mature enough, it's your judgment, he is your son. He probably knows how well you treat your knives and how much you respect it. I'm sure he wants to be just like you when he grows up. So if you think you can teach him early to respect weapon or a sharp edge, the earlier the better... Because with or without you, if they really wanted a sharp object, I'm sure they can get one...
A good idea is to get him his own, and he is allowed to handle it when you are supervising like on a hike and stuff... That's just my two cents...

:D Amazing isn't it?

My three boys all have their own Bussekin knives. I purchased them combat grade scrapper 5's .
Their ages are 13, 11,& 8.

Lucky guys I had to wait until I was 38 before I found out about and then purchased my first Bussekin.
