How old should your child be before getting their first Busse Knife?

My three year old and nine year old have more busse's than most should be aloud to. About 5 a piece, when a new one comes out that they like I'll let them sell an old one to get a new one. Of course with my help and encouragement. They love to look at them and when they're older they'll love to use them.

I remember the first "survival" knife I got for Christmas as a kid. I also remember how that knife was treated, and because of that reason, I just don't see giving a child an expensive knife like a Busse. Kids don't appreciate the quality and value, and have no problem leaving the knife outside in the rain, chopping rocks, or just flat out losing it. JMHO based on my experience as a child.

4 years old and dave made her sheath.

hot pink and the cub to match

thank ya dave

Can I be your kid too?

When I think of the cheap knives I destroyed as a kid by throwing them until they broke or came apart, and how I chopped everything with them including rocks and dirt, I wish my first one had been a Busse. I probably destroyed enought cheap knives to pay for a Busse.

I really don't understand how we could be so proud of the hard use and abuse we inflict on our Busses, but then consider kid carry to be too abusive. Your money, your kid. If you think he is ready and want his first to be a Busse, then I say go for it! I recommend something in the six inch blade range, based on my extensive childhood knife experience.:D

I wouldn't be worried about the abuse so much as the "oops I dropped it somewhere" that a kid is 100% likely to do.

my son is 13,,he only has a swiss army knife.i think maybe 15-16 ill give him the terror monkey dsf i bought a while back.but only if he shows the maturity to handle it....

I was in my late 30s before I could appreciate a high end knife. If you have the cash get him a smaller blade, SAR 3. If its his first time with a knife, get him a Swiss Army Knife.

get him a $50 ka-bar. can't go wrong with that. and they last. then when he's older.... get him a busse. let him trash the blade. teach him how to sharpen it. it'll hold up to the abuse. and when he's older. he can still use it....:D

got my first case peanut when I was 6 for Christmas.
Mom took it away from me a couple of months later for carving on the coffee table.

Gave my boy a CRKT when he was 8 or 9 ? My Daughter started around 11 or 12

He has about 6 Busse's now, that he knows about ;) and uses & paid for him self.

Breaking cheap knives teaches you what you should not do with knives. Giving a kid a busse from the start is like handing them the keys to a vette and expecting them to use it right.

I gave my grandson a SOW when he was 2 yrs. old. Ya can't sell the darn things...

Obviously its a personal choice. If you take your child out and supervise the use of a tool like that, teach them to use it properly and to care for it, then 7 to 9 should be plenty old enough (if they are expressing interest). A good sheath and a little guidance should prevent the loss when your out together. I personally would not turn them loose with one to go out and "play", nor would I want them keeping it in their room until they were a bit older but going out in the woods hunting, fishing, etc: with me would be no problem. I had knives at that age and although many in the world are worried about many things, I say the earlier they learn proper handling of such things the better.

I agree with you. fathers, we like to think that our kids will appreacite these things, but its a process and you can't jump stages. Give a child a Busse and dont cry when he changes it with a buddy for a Victorinox ( Dad, this one has a scredriver!!!)
Mi first real knife was a made in China "survival" knife, with the hollow plastic grip with stuff in it. Man I trashed that knife. Started sharppening knives with it, learned a thing or two and messed up the blade a lot. But I did build my first shelters with it,learned a lot. no, dont give a Busse to a child, save it until he's old enough to appreaciate the good stuff.

It all works out in the end - kinda like poker ;)

I was around that age when I got my frist. I collected about 6 or 7 by the time I was 14 I have no idea where any of those knifes are to this day ,inclueding a spyderco. The oldest knife I managed not loseing is a shrade my dad gave me when I was 15. Point is excpect him to lose a couple before he learns. But your kid mite be smarter then me:) . As far as safety go's I think you just got to watch & teach till your confident in there skills. Just my thoughts:)

PS can I be one of your kids I'll take that busse now:D

IMHO, a becker or Condor would make a good first knife. If he showed that the could take care of, and not lose it, i'd consider moving up to a higher end knife.

If i were ONLY going for the pure user category, a becker will give you almost as much durability as a Busse, at less than half the cost

My real answer would be "when he can pay for it himself". If my daughter wants a lexus, she can buy her own. I'll buy here a 10 year old toyota when she's old enough to use it, but i'm not spending 50k on one, even if i DO have the money

I'm new to Busse, but I'm hooked. I picked up a Sarge 7, and then an FBM. I gave my son, almost 12, the Sarge 7. To see his face and how he treasures it, is worth every penny I paid for it!!! It will last him his lifetime.

It's not his first knife, we had been collecting "store bought" knives for about 3 years. But then again, it's a Busse, so maybe it is his first real knife!

Both my Godsons got Puma folders when they were but months old.... both still have and use them (they are teenagers now) and both know where they came from and how to look after them... ;
