Thinking it may be time to get my son a knife. I mean he has knives that I have put up for him but he is getting into the outdoors and I am thinking of giving him something to actually carry while we are out in the woods. So my question is ....

How old were you when you were first able to carry "your" knife?

Garth

Humm... 7 or 8 I think... :D

My Godsons both got knives (Puma folders) from me as Christening presents, and have had them in hand since 10 or so.

I should add that the older Godson just got a De-Regulator from me for his 16th and the 15YO is getting a 411 from me for Christmas.

I got my first folder at age 10 I believe. I was only allowed to carry when we went fishing or out to the woods though.

Mind you my parents are not knife nuts like we are here but my father knew how much I loved knives, only reason I got one I think.

Kids these days have it too easy. I didn't get my first Busse blade til I was into my 20s.

I use a long knife to prepare the chickens at the farm I grew up on. I was 6. My first knife was a buck fixed blade that my mom gave me, I was 7.

I'd have to say about 10 was when I first was allowed to use one and 12 was my first.

I got my nephew his first knife at 13.

My grandfather gave me a buck folder when I was 7, my mom confiscated it until I was 10. Got my first Busse when I was 25.

5. Was a cheap folding knife. Bought my first "real" knife a SAK when I was 8, also bought my first fixed blade at 8.

.... I just like to make sure they have BETTER knives than their fathers (who are my two closest friends in the world) .... ;) ;)

I understand that. When my good friend from school had a son I gave him a knife to put up for when he was old enough for it. Then I felt bad that my friend would actually be behind his son when it came to knives so I ended up getting one for my buddy as well. Atleast now hima and his son will be able to enjoy them together when the time comes.

I was around 10 or so. A Wenger Swiss army knife it was. Both my brother an I got them for xmas one year. We used to use them to kill cane toads.

Reminds me of a game me and my bro used to play. Throw turnips to each other and catch em with the blades of our knives. Worked out real well considering they were non locking SAKs.

Been probably 8 when I joined scouts and was carrying a cheap knock off of Pukko. Around then or a bit later some really bad Russian slippies found their way into my pockets.
Never stopped since... quality started increasing and so did quantity...

I was 9, Wenger Swiss Soldier. My dad hid it on the Christmas tree and just waited until I found it, long after all the other gifts were opened :).

When I was 6 for my birthday I got a Case jigged bone handle pocket knife.

When I was 6 years old and about 2 weeks my Mother took it away from me for carving on the coffee table :)

I also got a Red Rider BB gun on the same birthday.

That got taken away about 2 months later for shooting not my eye out but I broke a taillight on one of the old "project" cars :(

Got the gun back but my Mom "lost" the knife :)

An Old Timer when I was 8 or 9. Carried it everywhere. Never got in trouble with it. I have a few for my daughter but she isn't 5 yet. Can't wait till she can use em.

I'd say 6-8 to own a SAK, maybe 10+ to own a folder, make sure he doesn't take it to school.
Perhaps over 12 to appreciate quality of CRKs or any high end knives. I'm 14 and I appreciate them as much as you do. :)
