How old were you.......

My dad gave me a leatherman when I was 8 or 9. I used to carry it all the time except to school.

for the record... your son is one of the top 10 luckiest kids in the world. He'll get to play with the goodies coming out of the shop before us poor slobs out here in the real world even know they exit

i think i was 5 or 6 with my grandfather gave me my first Old Timer. I wasn't a very responsible kid, so i promptly lost it, but working on a farm, a pocket knife was pretty much a necessity.

I got my first knife at around age 6, and I don't think anyone cared what I carried in those days. I had a knife in my pocket most of the time after I joined the cub scouts and was actively/openly trading for knives and other collectibles in school by 5th grade. NYC was a different place back then. We had two types of kids, the respectible ones and juvinile delinquents, and that counted far more than what you might have had in your pockets.

I was 7 when wy father reluctantly allowed my to buy a scout knife at a garage sale for 50 cents. I carried that thing through high school.
My daughters are 7 now - I actually don't think they're ready. One was playing with my SAK classic last night and really struggled with the scissors.
As you already know, it depends on the kid. If he's responsible and can handle it, go for it.

I believe I was 5-6 when my Grandfather gave me a pocketknife he had used while working in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. About the first time my uncle Bobby from Texas let me "help" shoot his .44 Mag.

My friends dad gave us each a Rambo style knife when we were in kindergarten myself my younger brother and the twins we had them for a week before the twins got into an argument over who killed who in our fake war and one stabbed the other right threw the hand and pinned him to a tree my brother and I took our knives out to the woods behind our house and hid them in a mail box we buried to hide the cool toys our parents didn't want us to have

I suppose 8 or 9, a nifty SAK, which I lost the same day (sniff!). I still miss that knife. Been carrying every day since Cub Scouts after that. By sheer coincidence, several decades later, my younger sister, who had just moved into the house next door to ours, discovered a rusted Scout knife in a flower bed. I used to mow that lawn and probably lost it there.

I cannot recall how young I was. From as far back as I can recall, I've had a knife of some sort.

I believe I was 8-10 crs. It was a Buck folder with ploymer handles. I still have.it 20 plus years later

A small Old Timer, probably around 8 years old. I even took it to school, but that was 30 years ago.

I got my first folder when I was about 8 and I've been (probably illegally) carrying them ever since. It's also important to remember that it is INEVITABLE that a kid with a knife will accidentally cut himself, sometimes quite badly. I still have have scars from where I filleted my little finger to the bone with my brand new Swiss Tool.

The key is, when the inevitable incident happens, instruct him as my dad instructed me, ''Dont tell your mother!''

Hi,

first folder: an Opinel N°8: I was 7 years old: first hollidays without parents, (colonie de vacances), 3 weeks far from home, with, at that time, just contact trough letters, 'once a week at best).
First fixed blade at 8 years, a scout knife made in Solingen.
One year lather, the first serious fixed knife: dagger, 2 sharp edges, blade 7 inches.
Never stopped since then!

I believe that I was eight or nine. My folks sent me to a summer camp called Mowglis in New Hampshire for several years. The owners called their camp "the school of the open" and any woods skills I ever learned, I learned from there. Starting very young, if you passed their knife safety class, you earned the privilege of carrying your typical boy's folding camping knife, the one with a main blade, a sheepsfoot, a bottle opener & can opener, IIRC. That was also the same place I learned how to shoot as they also had a NRA sponsored .22 LR rifle range. I kinda wish they had a session for adults. I'd love to get a refresher course.

Established in 1903, they are still in operation to this day. :)

I think I was nine. I bought it at the fair. After a summer of bailing hay and straw I realized I needed it.

when u was 6 my dad gave me a SAK tinkerer and i could carry it whenever I wanted. i was 12 untill i was able to carry a dedicated knife, which was a kershaw leek.:D

I was about 10 to 12 years old. I can't be sure but I think most boys can start understanding the toy vs tool aspect then. And I still cut my self lots in my early years.... Heck I did a few weeks ago with a MOKDSH
