How Small

A knife would you consider big enough for a camp/trail knife. We usually talk about pretty big knives for chopping and such but how big does it need to be? How about the Mora 2000? I am talking about just one knife plus the folder most of us carry 24/7.

My 24/7 woods knife. Never leaves my side.

I carry a Chris Reeves shadow III as my edc and a Swiss Army Knife called the Farmer that I got I got just a couple of days ago. I just ordered another Chris Reeves knife today and should have it Friday ( over night air ) I can hardely wait to get it and fill up the hollow handle with some survival goodies. ie fire steel, cotton, hooks and line, needle and thread. With a knife that has a blade of at least four inchs it seems to be just about right to carry as a all day knife and use as a camp knife. I like bigger knives for other work around camp though.

I happen to like really small fixed blades... lately I've been feeling thatmy bark river mini canadian is about the perfect size for me (cutting edge just over 2 inches).... but of course I'd have a machete or an axe in my pack... if not I'd choos something bigger

If I don't need to do heavy chores (splitting large amounts of wood, etc) this has always been enough for me:

Mora 510 will take care of just about everything I need. I don't think I have any smaller (decent) fixed blades.

I am also a big fan of Chudzinski's Nessmuk. (Picture shamefuly stolen from hollowdweller. :o )

The Fallkniven H1 is also a good one. (can't remember where I got this pic from)

I think you would be fine with 3" long, 3/32" thick, but I prefer 3 1/2" - 4" long, 3/32" thick.
My Mora #510 will do just about anything that I need it to do.

Fiddleback's new Bushcrafter model would also be an excellent woods blade in that size class. I'm excited to see when the pictorial reviews of those start popping up, so I can enviously see them in action.

In general, I'd want at least a 4" blade. (Most of my field blades fall between 4-6" blades) For quick hikes I might just carry a folder or my Carter necker though.

I went through a large chopper phase but have been paring it down to 5" or less. I'm down to a CS SRK and Master Hunter as field blades. I even find my Scrapper 6 less than comfortable and am lookinmg to sub that one out as well.

I tried the Bravo-1 but found thicker than I liked and am leaning toward the Fox River or Northstar.

I've gotten by on week long back packing trips with my old Buck 102 or a mora. But I also had a sak with a sawblade in my pocket.

I just picked up a Bark River Bravo 1, this is a great blade, razor sharp, has some serious heft, and slices very very well.

Bark River Northstar - backed up by a SAK or Multitool.

I really, really want to try a Nessmuk pattern though.
