How Small

I generally take along a SAK of any type and find it suitable for the camp tasks that don't involve heavy knife work, that say a 'chopper' would be needed in; such as butchering a large animal. Mora has worked great for me as a utility knife in camp; though i often carry my Benchmade FB Griptilain if going out for an extended backwoods trip. It feels more solid in my hand over the lighter weight Mora, and in my mind I guess I 'trust it' more not to break if tasks to do something out of the ordinary. There is something to be said for a nice little 2-3" blade in camp though, keeps the boredom away while one sits and foools with wood IME.

I take his bigger brothers if needed though.

I never take a folder with me, I am surprised by how many here do. I may have to re-evaluate my carry.

A 4 1/4" blade length with a width of 1 1/8" can get most any job done in the woods.

The Skookum Bush tool design has just about every base covered in what is required for a field knife. This is not designed as a Defense knife but a solid working woods knife.

Personally I like the blade to be around 5 1/4" to 5 1/2" long with a blade width of 1 1/4" only because my natural slicing range of motion seems about this long and large fish cleaning is easier and the wider blade lets me get a good grip on the blade for chores like scraping. Even a 5 1/2" blade is to small to proccess big game like Bears and such but can be accomplished.

I have tried small blades of around 3" over and over again, they just are not worth all the extra effort to accomplish many woods tasks that a blade only an inch or so longer makes easy work of, Even so there is a small kneck knife of 6" total length as back up with me all the time" ' 2.99" blade and 3" handle fixed blade wrapped with Para550 and spiderwire.

I love my camp knives, like my Camp Tramp, but they are too big to lug out if you are doing a short woods walk. Instead, I have started to carry my EDC rotation ;). A Jim Rehrer EDC O1 steel maple handle, a Butch Harner hunter D2 coco handle, my David Farmer EDC 1095, even my Swamp Rat Howling Rat. But those are still too big! Right now, I have my Bark River mini Northstar on my belt, it could just as easily fit in my pocket. The one that I have really liked carrying is my David Farmer small EDC, getting a neck sheath right now. My Gossman PSK is with Scott, getting a mesquite handle and a neck sheath, and will probably be my main home user, therefore, will get a lot of woods time. Also looking at one of Scotts PSK Jr's.
