How strong is your edge?

My blade is made of M2 and hardened to Rc65.
I try firerod now.

The edge rolled over and cannot even cut a piece of paper.
Now I have to sharpen it :D

I usually use the spine for firesteel work but I'll play....
I've been using my dp scandi camp master exclusively for a while....1095 full scandi grind I strop it after use but have yet to sharpen it the thing is a titan..I don't know if it would shave after scraping a ferro, but it would definitely be servicable....as far as cedar goes.. no contest still shaving.. did it the other day....
I find under normal circumstances that a sccandi edge usually needs to be sharpened a bit more than say a convex grind, but not this puppy a little stropping and I'm g2g

Now it's back to be sharp again.
Domo Talfuchre sensei, please don't mind.

In my experience, scraping wood means almost nothing to the edge but for the bark,
which sometimes contains grain of dirt and do bad to the edge.

Fujita,

Arigatou gozaimasu. I am glad you have your steel sharp again! ;)

James,

Yup. Don't use the edge for the firesteel - but it is okay for scraping wood for a fire.

I have struck a firesteel with the edge of my Koster Bushcraft 3v a few times. No it was not intentional, I just wasn't paying attention. There was no damage at all, it Was still really sharp after words. Probably not shaving sharp, but definately sharp.

I prefer to use the spine of my knife to strike a firesteel as well as scrape wood. When I have used the edge to scrape wood there has never been any damage either.

I however prefer a knife with a hard square spine to handle these tasks.

Always better to have a separate striker for your ferro rod. Leave it attached to the rod and it's always there. No need messing up the edge of your knife using it as a striker.

When I scraped blackened part of rod which was long exposed to the air, the edge rolled with no spark generated.
Scraping the part where fresh metal can be seen was relatively OK with large amount of spark (actually not spark but fireballs :D).

Fujita-san,

The black portion is actually a coating. It will not spark. Once you scrape it away - you have gotten to the mish-metal. This is the part that sparks.
