How Tastes Evolve

Started with an Imperial BSA scout knife when I was in cub scouts:

Then bigger cheap chinese folders when I was in boy scouts, including one with a saw back. \

Then a Gerber gator when those all broke:

Then Kershaw chives, scallions, and all the rest of the Ken Onion line when I worked at block buster

After that I started at my job on the river and went to Emersons, tasman salt on my pfd.

Started working at my IT job as an intern around then and got my first delica

Started camping on my own a lot more and picked up an RC3

Then I really started buying and went through a bunch of fancier mid techs that were still on the sharpened pry bar side like striders and some ZTs, as well as a bunch of spydercos, ended up with about 70 $50-350 knives, that lasted quite a while.

Two years ago I stopped by 2nd job and had no need for chunky work knives, sold them all off and used some of the funds for a sebenza, zdp dragonfly, zt0300, and a blackjack 125 along with a few other favorites.

Here I am today mostly using a GEC47 or 15 along with the seb and dragonfly most of the time. Typically looking at traditional style knives, while still lusting but never pulling the trigger on stuff like the Slyze Bowie, or Zt 0452 and still hunting for a birthday small micarta sebenza that I've been after for years. The 8 year old me with the scout knife with a nail breaker can opener would be dumbfounded by where I ended up.

Currently, the biggest change for me has been moving away from frame locks, as I've carried them for about a decade now and looking for something different. I've been moving towards knives that more truly offer the features I consider important over simply buying the "old default" knives I've owned in the past. I still want quality, but have come to the conclusion based on my own experiences that doesn't have to mean spending north of $350 to get it. I'm also pretty sure I'm done with most custom knives, as the knives I've owned simply weren't any better than high end production knives.
