How to clean up old ceramic sticks?

...and if you want very fine polish then rub a pencil over the surface prior to final hone strokes.

Really?!? Sounds interesting. Anyone else ever try this? I'd like to hear a bit more before I try it.

Regarding the OP... why not try both methods being proposed? First the hot water with abrasive cleanser and a pastic scrubby/toothbrush/etc., dry the sticks off well after, THEN do the eraser if not clean enough. Or the other way around.

I find the eraser (white vinyl style in my case) works better than the cleanser and scrubby, though.

Gonna be a Necromancer for a moment and ask a dumb question, but um...

How exactly do i use the lansky eraser? it just gets black and clogged up when i rub it, should i apply light pressure or what?
