Does anyone know how to defend against a wing chun (or bastard sytle from it) sytlist? Not Mega-Sifu Butt Kig Ink, just an average one. Long range kiciks? Grappling?

Hmmm...this really isn't a a question for the Filipino Combat Arts forum, but I'll give you my 2 cents on the subject.

Wing Chun specializes in trapping and 'in-fighting' range, therefore DON'T fight in their range of expertise. If you have good, hard, fast kicks, then use that. If you're a good grappler, then use that. On the street however, there's NO RULES so you might want to watch out for the WC guy who is out to throw a Bil Jee finger jab at your eyes or low kick to your groin. If it's some WC practitioner whose out to make a streetfight a 'chi-sao' match, then charge right into him and pummel him senseless.

Btw, this is not a slam against WC, I myself have been studying WC (Moy Yat lineage) for some 7 years, and I really enjoy it. I just think that there's a little too much emphasis these days on the trapping techniques of WC and not enough on hitting, know what I mean?

Anyway, hope this helps you out. Anyone else have an opinion on this subject? I'm curious to hear what y'all think.

Peace,

Jay

Oh okay, 3 good choices
1) Throw hook punches
2) Take them to the ground
3) Minimize any contact with any arms touching yours.

not to offend anybody here that is doing wing chun or jeet kune do, but my advice is to use your hands boxing style, which is to snap your punches back and punch in combination; move your feet a lot, dont stand right in front of him; kick him in combination, all that you should be okay. you will find that most of the trappings wont work against these types of attacks.

All of the above, IMHO, are perfectly and absolutely sensible answers...that said, I think the best way to neutralize any "bubbling-possibly-into-violence" interpersonal conflict, regardless of the stuff the aggressor may or may not know, is to assume either what Tony Blauer would call a "submissive strategy" (ie. assume a "non-violent" posture--let's say a somewhat bladed stance, knees bent, hands up, relaxed, and held in front of you with elbows bent, in a calming "I-don't-want-any-trouble-mister" manner, and sincerely attempt to verbally DE-ESCALATE the situation so that both of you don't have to do any kinda violence, while staying aware of any possible false moves on the bad guy's part...failing that, capitalise upon his belligerent false sense of security--which you will have established through the use of choice speech and nonthreatening/telegraphic posture, and hit him first, hard, rapidly, and to the vitals (like the eyes, ears/temples, throat/sides and back of neck, solar plexus, groin/bladder, knees, shins, top of foot) repeatedly until he's broken and down--"Science of the Sucker Punch"--then run like hell, or call the cops, etc.--whatever is appropriate at the time) or, if it is REALLY a potential horror-show situation about to explode, then you will have to deploy a concealed weapon (use same submissive/sucker-punch stategy above, practice covert/quick draws). Hopefully, you won't have to end the guy. Know how to do so, just in case. Also be aware of less lethal targets. Use those, if you can. Lotsa info on that here on Bladeforums. Explore and see.

Guns and knives (and impact weapons, like Asp batons, to a lesser degree) are terrifying street-equalizers, I don't care what style your attacker does. And they are all over the place. If you do FMAs already, ya know what I mean.

These things, which will work in every situation, regardless of whether the bad guy is a good kicker, trapper, puncher or grappler, may seem totally dirty and uncool, but that's what real violence is like--no styles, no systems, just rapidfire stinking cruelty that you wanna survive and go home from and try to heal your spirit in the aftermath.

You use deception, stealth, and ruthlessness--strategy and tactic--to GET to be able to go back home.

And this is why these days, I prefer to stay home and read and write poetry and short stories and surf the Net and listen to blues and soul music and daydream and hang out with gorgeous, artsy chicks than think about fights (that is, when I'm not researching and training in Kali and CQC! LOL).

Incidentally, if your environmental awareness and sensitivity to violent intent is up and running like it should be, you probably won't have to deal with stuff like kung-fu dueling, among other things...unless you choose to, in which case ya might deal with somebody using the above methods on you...yeeesh, do yourself a favor, don't let that happen.

Just my humble, if crankily and totally sleep-deprived insomniac opinion...

Incidentally, Heimdall, sorry if I got all preachy and irritable on that last post--been on less than 4 hours sleep a night for the past few days, and I've just run out of coffee for the machine...you take care of yourself, and peace.

Stay outside trapping range and feint high. Then when you see an opening, shoot low and take him to the ground. If you tackle him hard enough, you can pound him while he is stunned.

Regarding hook punches to wing chun practioners, keep in mind that some 'flavors' of wing chun, such as jiu wan, train very hard on defending against hooks. Bill dar or gan da (simultaneous defense and attack), if done correctly, is very effective.

Thanks to all of you! I believe a Smith&Wesson would also do the job right, but here in Germany it easier to get a licence to print money than to get a CCW.

Everybody has made good points, I would just like to put this in.

Change the range.

Most Wing Chun is done in a specific range so just alter the range. This is where a good Silat/Kuntao background comes in handy and as mentioned before some good boxing skills work well.

Just remember to retract in order to counter the trapping. If he's really good you're in trouble anyway, so a Glocking might be in order just the same none the less!

This isn't ment to be an offend to any WC-guy! If you thrain in WC see this as a list of things to avoid in a fight. If hadn't much respect for WC I wouldn't think about it!

Hi there, I'm new to this bladeforum and I'd like to add my 2 Cents to the discussion at hand. Well, you are neither fighting a technique nor you are fighting a stylist. You are always fighting a person. When you are engaged in street combat you won't know what style/technique your assailant prefers. Maybe he/she is a boxer, grappler etc. You won't have enough to find out what martail art background he/she has. You used the word "defend" in your question. Actually I don't like that term because defense won't work in the streets. If you always try to block/evade the attacks of your opponent and he/she only wants to knock your heat of it's simply a matter of time when his/her mission will be completed. Hence you always attack the attacker!!! If he/she tries to throw a punch you immediately fight back with ferocity (..the idea to intercept an incomming punch is one of the major principles in Wing Chun).

Maybe this helps a least a little bit.

Regards from Germany,

Bernd.

I second Messermafia--don't think of the style, think of the human interaction that is that moment of conflict...face it on that level, use psychology and deception, close aggressively and finish if ya can't de-escalate the situation...

Sorry guys if you don't understand what I'll write to Bernd now, but I tell you, you don't miss any information, as it is about an inner-German problem.

Hallo Bernd,

OK guys. I was just komplaining about a Martial-Arts-Factory in Germany.

Bernd.

P.S.: Sorry for this little reply in German!

Heimdall, Berndt, no worries. Many overseas folk complain here about the WT section of AEWTO. BTW, I used to take Latosa Escrima and am taking WC now from one of my escrima teachers, though we're not affiliated with AEWTO.

definitely agree with Messermafia...
BTW...how polite of you guys to apologize for using your own language; no offense taken by me- it looks cool!

my brother was in Achen (Acken??) last year for some big artificial intelligence computer seminar thing. i wish someday i could visit Germany; my cousin has been over many, many times for beer festivals and such- he loves it! And i just recently had an older German-American woman who travels back and forth; she can't stay away from her country of birth for long she said; she loves it that much...brought me back lots of pics and such. You have some really beautiful sights over there! (yeah, i was looking at some pics she took of some ladies in the family!).
