sold two items for X and Y USD
received payment in CAD for X (didnt notice until now, is it something on my side or his side that does that? my paypal account is Canadian also, why did I properly receive USD for Y?)
shipped item X, the person have it now

i have 2 problems

1. I now have a balance in CAD, I was going to use it to buy other thing in USD, i will be hit by conversion fee when it's time (fun fee here again)
2. I'm unsure what happen with the payment, if I do the math it look like I lost ~25 CAD or ~20 USD, did paypal took that much to convert usd to cad or whatever?! (this is not paypal fee for G&S, this I see it)

i know it's my mistake of not noticing until now but to my defence, it was the first time ever selling something with paypal so yeah .. big oops from me.

so how should I handle this? should I try to risk a refund and asking to be paid again knowing the item is now in the hand of the buyer?
should i take the hit and take this as an "expensive" learning lesson for later?

I didnt leave any feedback yet to this person, how should I handle that part too?

what a mess for me, i also noticed it since it nearly happen again with another item just now, there was a 20$ CAD missing. Luckily, this time I was in the process of doing the shipping label when I saw that and I did a refund and asked to be paid in USD. (lesson learned!)

Did these transaction happen through the sales section here at Bladeforums or elsewhere?

Can you give what prices X and Y are?

X is 410 usd
Y is 550 usd

what I got from paypal for X is 488.81 CAD which is ~390 USD

from that 488.81, paypal took 18.39$ fee, leaving me with 470.42 CAD

(i will correct the amount in my OP, I lost in fact 20 usd / 25 cad)

i will contact paypal to see if they can fix this for me but i don't have high hope

i received Y as USD and is still USD, not converted to CAD or anything.

full amount as expected

Ah! Ok.
So basically, yes…if paypal converts the money (at the buyers end) the conversion is more than if you google what is $410 usd to can. You end up with less than the google conversion.

Since PP did not convert the other USD, the amount is correct.

On the buyers end, sometimes they can pick an option to send the funds in USD to you. But generally the buyer just plugs in $410USD and it shows that the seller will receive “such and such” amount CAN.

I know that when I set up my paypal account, it asked what country’s currency I wanted my incoming funds in. So if I ask for USD, PP will automatically convert.

It’s puzzling me how you got USD to stay USD.

Are you checking your transaction on a mobile phone or the actual desktop site? Sometimes the desktop site will give you more information about the transaction.

The short of it is this.

paypal always makes money off the conversion. Always. Their rate is not the same as the google rate.

So if you are wanting $510 CAN. You should list Can$. When the buyer pays you they see that they will need to pay more than $410 usd to make $510 CAN.

If you want usd, you may have to adjust your asking price higher to take into consideration that PP is gonna gouge on the conversion.

Unfortunately, I can’t speak to why the other transaction has stayed in the USD currency. I have no experience with that.

100% desktop site and yeah i'm reading a lot about this, it seem i'm not alone getting hit by this issue

it might be that the buyer need to really specify USD or no conversion or if they don't use paypal found, like if they use credit card or bank, it might auto convert or something like this

i will go to bed and hope the latest sale that I made and refunded, the buyer will figure out how to keep it 100% USD so I can complete it

Good luck. Sorry. It’s 2am and I’m trying to type clear thoughts. Haha.

I’m sure PP can explain better.

2 Things:
should I try to risk a refund and asking to be paid again
1) I don't think Paypal refunds transaction fees any longer. So you'd be hit with the Transactions fees again= Twice.
2) I'd chalk it up to a $20 lesson learned and be clearer about how you expect payments to be made and in what currency.

I think I had that mind set when I posted, sometime learning have a cost to it and this might be it

I'm kind of angry at myself, I should have seen it, not sure what bother me more, the 20$ missing or the conversion fee when i move it back to USD or both together.

At least I caught it in time in my last sale.

If it were me I would chalk it up to experience.
The possible unpleasant ramifications of getting into it could be far worse than the 20 Bucks. Put it down to school fees and move on.
This right here is excellent, experienced advice. I’m in agreement.
